MISSIONARY MOMENTS

November14-20, 2011

SCOTT BRADFORD serves in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, with his wife, JULIE MARIE.  In March 2010, Scott was riding home on his motorcycle when a dark car pulled out in front of him. Scott made the split-second decision to lay the motorcycle down on its side, but he was unable to avoid impact with the car. Miraculously, he was able to make a call to his logistics coordinator, and three missionary friends rushed to help him. Scott says, "Although I could have gone to see the Lord face-to-face, He saw fit to keep me around and continue to serve Him that I might give Him the glory as our family serves Him in sub-Saharan Africa." Your support of missions through CP and the Lottie moon christmas Offering makes a difference in the lives of missionaries as well as the people groups they serve. Thank God for protecting Scott during this accident.

North American missionaries JOE and GINA BALL have a passion for reaching students with the Gospel. As youth strategist for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, Joe supports, challenges, and encourages youth ministers across Kentucky to reach this generation with the Gospel. Ministries such as regional evangelism events, blogs, and podcasts provide opportunities for youth leaders to learn from and dialogue over key issues. The current generation of students is among the most unchurched and lost in our nation's history. Our willingness to combine our efforts and our resources with like-minded churches through the Cooprative program, and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering is essential in helping Joe reach students who are spiritually hungry and searching for relationships, relevance, and spiritual truth. Pray for Joe and for the students living in the Bluegrass State to discover and embrace exactly what they need - Jesus Christ.

MENTORING IN LEADERSHIP

Pauls' History: The Background of a Mentor

Paul was a first-century mentor who, seeking to rise up another generation of Christian leaders, invested his life in younger men. Paul invested in several men, including Timothy and Titus-all first-century church leaders. In his mentoring relationship with Timothy, we can compare Paul's approach to mentoring with Jesus' approach.

Paul initiated the mentoring relationship:

We don't know much about the divine intersection that led to Paul's mentoring relationship with Timothy. Paul was traveling through the city of Lystra on his second missionary journey when he announced he wanted Timothy to travel with him (Acts 6:1-5). It's possible that Timothy converted to Christianity during Paul's trip through Lystra on his first missionary journey, but we're not told when Timothy became a believer. We do know that his mother and grandmother were believers who trained young Timothy in the Word of God (Acts 16:1; 2 Timothy 1:3-5; 3:14-17). Timothy's father, a Greek, was likely a non-believer.

Timothy and Paul's mentoring relationship provides a model for us. First, Paul as mentor took the lead in establishing the relationship (you might remember that Jesus took the initiative, too, in calling His disciples). Paul apparently kept his eyes open for believers who showed promise and Timothy caught his attention. Maybe Paul had heard from church leaders who recognized Timothy's giftedness (1 Timothy 1:18; 4:14). However Paul enlisted Timothy, Paul eventually came to speak of Timothy as a fellow worker in the gospel.

Taking the initiative in mentoring isn't always easy. Jesus was the Son of God. Paul was an apostle extraordinaire. Compared to them, we might struggle with whether we'd be welcomed as potential mentors. How do we take the initiative in recruiting people to mentor? Read More

To date, we have received approximately 55% of the Annual Church Profiles from IBA churches. Considering the deadline was October 14 to complete your profile, we would encourage you to do so as soon as possible. This year there are only fourteen questions, and should not require a lot of time to complete. We will be contacting those that have not submitted their ACP this week.

Please contact Lila if you need assistance, or would like a copy of last year's profile to use as a guideline. give her a call at 503-452-2930, ext. 21 or e-mail: lila@interstatebaptist.org.

The world of criminal records is confusing and fogged by misconceptions regarding access to and storage of criminal records.  Let's continue clearing up those misconceptions.

  Background check

  • According to the Office of the Attorney General, "No single source exists that provides complete and up-to-date information about a person's criminal history." Check it out for yourself!
  • Public records are filed by First Name, Last Name and Date of Birth at the courthouses.
  • The only way to get 100% confirmation is through a fingerprint match.

So what are you to do?The Office of the Attorney General is of the opinion that "commercial databases offer the advantage to users who cannot access FBI data of broadening the scope of records searched beyond the jurisdictions of past residence."

So try a commercial database! backgroundchecks.com offers many affordable database options including US OneSEARCH or US OneVERIFY to help expand your scope beyond the county courthouse. To view our product descriptions and the reduced LifeWay pricing go to: www.lifeway.com/backgroundchecks.
