MISSIONARY MOMENTS

October 31-November 6, 2011

Member care is a ministry of counsel and encouragement provided by trained professionals for missionaries. One couple who provides such care writes: "The two of us provide member care to those who live and work in difficult places and to their families. With our help, we are able to encourage, empower, and equip these servants to stand firm. Each personal visit, phone call, e-mail, or resource we share to strengthen our folks is possible through your faithfulness and generosity." Through your support of missions through CP, you are extending the ministrty of the body of Christ. The result is that more and more people are accepting Christ. God's Kingdom is advancing! Your praying and your giving make a difference in helping to keep those on the front lines healthy adn effective for the Kingdom's sake. Today, pray for the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of all our missionaries.

In Jacksonville, Florida, North American missionary DAVID GARRETT helps churches build bridges to their communities by meeting real and specific needs. David challenges churches with the call of being 'missionaries' to the primary mission field they encounter every day, thanks in part to your desire to reach people through CP. David encourages churches to see beyond the church walls and helps them discover ways to use their God-given talents to reach communities with God's transforming power. The North American mission field is increasingly difficult to engage, but with your prayers, participation, and continued support, missionaries like David can equip churches around North America to rise to the challenge. Pray for David and the churches in Jacksonville this week.

Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund

Southern Baptists established the World Hunger Fund in 1978. Contributions not designated specifically for overseas hunger or domestic hunger are distributed to the International Mission Board (80%) and the North American Mission Board (20%). World Hunger Fund contributions averaged just over six million dollars per year from 1978 through 2004. The SBC Executive Committee received and distributed four and one half million dollars for hunger relief in each of the two most recent budget years (2009-2010 and 2010-2011).

Responding to the Indonesian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Southern Baptists increased their support of disaster relief, with an attendant decline in contributions to World Hunger. Hunger needs remain great.  Southern Baptists are urged prayerfully to consider including world hunger in their personal budgets as they give above and beyond their tithes and offerings through their local churches.

MENTORING IN LEADERSHIP

Making Disciples: Jesus' Power and Presence

mentoring

Do you remember how many expressions of the Great Commission there are in the New Testament? The answer is five: Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20, and Acts 1. Each of these Scripture passages is about the church being sent to all people groups to tell the gospel and make disciples. These passages also include a promise of power within the promise of presence:

"And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

"And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high" (Luke 24:49),

"After saying this, He breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit'" (John 20:22).

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you ..." (Acts 1:8).

Jesus, in His authority as the Son of God, ordered us to make disciples sharing the gospel and teaching believers. Then, He assured us of the power to get the job done. The Father promised to empower us, the Son is ever with us, and the Spirit has come upon us. What else do we need? The Spirit empowers us to teach the Word of God boldly and powerfully (Acts 4:8, 31). He produces the fruit of the Spirit in us (Galatians 5:22-23) and gives us spiritual gifts to use in ministry (1 Corinthians 12:11). When we seek truth, the Spirit guides us there (John 14:17; 15:26). When we don't know how to pray, He will intercede for us. (Romans 8:26-27) The Spirit of God lives in us, and He gives us what we need to be growing mentors and mentees. We don't mentor in and of our own strength. We don't have to worry or wonder if we'll know what to say at the right time or how to deal with every situation. We can simply walk through life with those we mentor, knowing that God's presence and power are waiting at every turn.

Jesus' Power in Modern Mentors

How do we tap into this power that's promised in Scripture so it's evident in our mentoring relationships? First. we admit we can't do it on our own. None of us can live holy lives in our own strength, and none can change somebody else's life. We all default toward pride, not humility. We're self-absorbed, by nature, and that trait makes us less than ideal mentors and mentees. Let's just admit together that we can't do well in a mentoring relationship apart from God's power.

Jesus' Power at Work

Imagine a blank sheet of paper in front of you. On that paper, list all the reasons you can think of to keep you from mentoring someone else. Your list might look like this: too little time, don't know enough, afraid of vulnerability, don't know where to start, not sure who the mentee would be, never mentored before, and so on.

Then, envision a separate list of reasons for not being mentored. Your list might overlap with the first one, but it will probably include other reasons, too: not sure what being mentored would involve, not enough time, afraid of being vulnerable, don't want to be accountable, not sure anyone would want to invest in me.  Read More...

The world of criminal records is confusing and fogged by misconceptions regarding access to and storage of criminal records.  Let's continue clearing up those misconceptions.

  Background check

  • According to the Office of the Attorney General, "No single source exists that provides complete and up-to-date information about a person's criminal history." Check it out for yourself!
  • Public records are filed by First Name, Last Name and Date of Birth at the courthouses.
  • The only way to get 100% confirmation is through a fingerprint match.

So what are you to do?The Office of the Attorney General is of the opinion that "commercial databases offer the advantage to users who cannot access FBI data of broadening the scope of records searched beyond the jurisdictions of past residence."

So try a commercial database! backgroundchecks.com offers many affordable database options including US OneSEARCH or US OneVERIFY to help expand your scope beyond the county courthouse. To view our product descriptions and the reduced LifeWay pricing go to: www.lifeway.com/backgroundchecks.
