DISASTER RELIEF RECAP

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

"Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise in later life. Many plans are in a man's heart, but the LORD's decree will prevail," Proverbs 19:20-21 (HCSB).

Disasters are never in our plan and in fact if we could, we would plan for them not to happen. In this fallen world, disasters have been happening and will continue to happen. Southern Baptists volunteers will continue to respond to meet the needs of the suffering in the midst of disaster as long as God tarries. These volunteers take time that they had planned to use for vacation or retirement and give that time back to God. They share their motive in serving others and they share the good news of the Gospel from His word. We may make plans but we also know the truth found here in Proverbs that, "the Lord's decrees will prevail."

Texas Fires ~ Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers from Arkansas, California, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas (SBTC & TBM), and Utah/Idaho continue to serve residents who have seen their communities devastated by fire. Volunteers are helping homeowners sift through the ashes of destroyed homes. Others are involved in; feeding, chaplaincy, operations, assessment, shower and laundry ministry.

Photo right: Some of the California recovery volunteers who made the journey toDR_CA_Team Bastrop, Texas to help sift through the ashes of burned homes and clean the home sites so that residents can begin the rebuilding process.

So far these volunteers have logged 16,290 hours of volunteer work, saving the residents more than $325,800.00. These volunteers have provided 9,123 meals and cleaned 117 sites. They have shared the gospel with 68 individuals, provided 1,095 showers, and washed 424 loads of laundry.

Teams are scheduled to be in the area through October and into November.

In addition to the work volunteers are doing in response to the fires, Baptists from several states have been helping Texas ranchers with hay to feed animals in the midst of a worsening drought.

WANT TO MOBILIZE YOUR CHURCH

NAMB

When I think of the word "mobilize," a picture comes to mind of a great General amassing large numbers of troops and supplies.  He assembles his officers to discuss the battle at hand, share and receive wisdom concerning details and risks, and finalizes the appropriate strategy to accomplish their mission.  Although it may seem to be the task of a singular military genius, the reality is that if the battle is to be won, the effort must be the corporate fulfillment of like-minded leaders networking with one another for a mutual goal.  We, too, have a mission to accomplish.  And, although we may have many great "generals," if the battle for defeating the enemy of lostness in North America is to be won, our armies must work in concert together, networking our people and resources to accomplish our God-given task.

The second priority of "IMPACT" is "mobilize" - to assist associations to network their people and resources to engage lostness and begin new work.

Networking isn't a recent strategic phenomena.  It is a biblical concept practiced in the early church where teaching, training and the sharing of information served a strategic purpose.  In Acts 8, we see the church scattered and the apostles responding to the needs of a growing church by sending Peter and John to network in ministry with Philip.  In Acts 9, God "networked" Ananias and Barnabas together with the church to launch Saul into ministry.  Acts 11 shows the accountability and strength of an early church network striving together to take the message of Christ throughout Asia Minor.  In a realistic sense, the apostles in the early church functioned as much like network facilitators, or catalysts for new work, as they did as missionaries.

Someone may say, "What is the difference between a network and a partnership?"  I am glad you asked!  Networking in ministry essentially means sharing information to more efficiently develop and carry out a strategy.  A partnership implies a higher level of commitment and may grow out of a network to address a specialized focus or need.  It is the desire of IMPACT to see networks developed which lead to the organization of partnerships, alliances, and coalitions to accomplish the call of God through associations across North America.
