MISSIONARY MOMENTS

October 24-30, 2011

In a small Vermont town, there stood an old vacant church. God  called LYANDON and KIM WARREN, North American missionaries, to impact this area and fill that old church. Working bivocationally while building relationships in the town, Lyandon is seeing new life rise up in that old building. New life is exciting, but it is also fragile. Pray for protection and direction as they lead this new group of believers in a small town where most don't know Christ. From the smallest of towns to the largest of cities, your support of missions through CP is making a difference. This week, ask God to bless and multiply the ministry of the Warrens.

The Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world. Every three years, Hindus make a pilgrimage to one of four cities to bathe in the holy rivers. In 2010, the festival was held in Haridwar, India, with smaller festivals held elsewhere. Close to 50 million participated. "JOHNNY and BONITA KRON" serve in South Asia and observed one of the smaller gatherings. "The vastness of the crowd is unbelievable; the heaviness of the oppression is inexplicable," Bonita says. "Watching men, women, young, old, rich, poor -- all attempting to attain salvation through the polluted murky water is heartbreaking. The police made it clear they would not tolerate 'those attempting conversions to Western religion.' Threfore, we wre not able to openly share. We did pray with broken hearts for the millions who attended." Your prayers and participation in CP are needed to penetrate the lostness throughout South Asia. Pray today.

Southern Baptists are encouraged to:

Pray for someone who doesn't know Christ. Pray by name for your neighbors and begin relationships with them. Gather with other believers in your neighborhood or at your church to pray together for non-Christian neighbors.

Invest in your non-Christian neighbor. Spend some time getting to know your non-Christian neighbors. Look for opportunities to serve them in ministry.

Invite the person to a Gospel-centered event. As you build relationships with your non-Christian neighbors, take advantage of opportunities to invite them to do something with you and your family. Speak naturally about your faith; lead in prayer over your shared meal. Church holiday events, such as Trunk or Treat, Fall-Fest, Thanksgiving services, Christmas pageants, Christmas Eve, or other Christmas-themed events also have natural "invitation" potential.

Share Christ with your neighbor.God still uses the personal witnessing moment to lead people to faith in Christ. Present the Gospel with your prayed-for neighbor. Or take them someplace where the Gospel will be shared.

MENTORING IN LEADERSHIP - PART THREE

Making Disciples: Jesus' Method

Jesus told His disciples to make disciples, and He modeled for them how to do that. We also have to understand that Jesus called these men in stages.

The stages of Jesus' call view/download.

Jesus spent time with His Disciples

The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels. It's action-packed, with fewer extensive teaching segments than the other Gospels. A quick look at Mark's record shows that Jesus shared life with His disciples. They watched Him heal the sick, exorcise demons, confront religious leaders, calm storms, raise the dead, walk on water, multiply food, and overturn tables. These men heard Him answer questions, preach to crowds, silence demons, speak parables, and pray to the Father. They ate with Him, discussed truth with Him, and ministered alongside Him.

All of that was possible because Jesus spent quality time with His disciples. Indeed, He called them first to be with Him (Mark 3:14), and their time with Him changed their world. Mentoring means that we give a mentee much more than a book or a conference; we give ourselves to another person for the sake of the gospel.

Jesus gave His Disciples tasks...and held them accountable.

Imagine following Jesus to the top of a mountain where His garments are changed to a brilliant white. Then, think about bowing in amazement when, still at the top of this mountain, Moses and Elijah show up-the lawgiver and the prophet of Old Testament history who have been deceased for centuries.

Read Luke 9:28-35 - Imagine God's voice saying, "This is My Son ... listen to Him." It's no wonder Peter stated the obvious, "it's good for us to be here!'" Who would've known what to say in the midst of such a miracle? How would you respond?

Peter didn't want to leave; instead, he wanted to build a tabernacle to mark this place. But Jesus wouldn't allow His disciples to stay on that mountain. There was still work for Him to do. There was still work for the disciples to do, too-following in obedience, sharing the good news, and making more disciples. More immediately, a young boy possessed with a demon needed Jesus' help. For that reason, Jesus went with His disciples back down the mountain to do His work. Good mentoring should always lead to Godly action.

Jesus taught His mentees and expected them to act on His teachings.

Luke 9-10 describes this sending out process, including Jesus' instructions (9:1 -6; 10:1-11). He sent them out to take on demons. He challenged them to figure out a way to feed more than 5,000 people when they had far too little food. He required them to pray for more laborers. even while they went out to preach and heal in His name.

Upon their return, they gave Jesus a report of their travels. When they rejoiced in their spiritual power rather than in God's grace, He loved them enough to correct them don't be excited about your power over demons, be excited about your acceptance from God (Luke 10:18-20). These interactions between Jesus and His apostles show us that accountability is a part of Christ like mentoring. Jesus had expectations of those who followed Him. He didn't love them any less when those expectations went unmet, but He always called His followers to grow. We should do the same.

Jesus' gave His life for His disciples.

The death of Jesus is central to our Christian faith. Apart from Jesus' shedding His blood for us, we can't be saved (Hebrews 9:22). Jesus' cross shows us just how much He loved His disciples- and how much He loves us. We don't ordinarily give our lives for those we mentor in this same way. But we can love in such a way that we're willing to give our lives for them.

The world of criminal records is confusing and fogged by misconceptions regarding access to and storage of criminal records.  Let's continue clearing up those misconceptions.

  Background check

  • According to the Office of the Attorney General, "No single source exists that provides complete and up-to-date information about a person's criminal history." Check it out for yourself!
  • Public records are filed by First Name, Last Name and Date of Birth at the courthouses.
  • The only way to get 100% confirmation is through a fingerprint match.

So what are you to do?The Office of the Attorney General is of the opinion that "commercial databases offer the advantage to users who cannot access FBI data of broadening the scope of records searched beyond the jurisdictions of past residence."

So try a commercial database! backgroundchecks.com offers many affordable database options including US OneSEARCH or US OneVERIFY to help expand your scope beyond the county courthouse. To view our product descriptions and the reduced LifeWay pricing go to: www.lifeway.com/backgroundchecks.

SAFE MINISTRIES

SAFE"It is always a great concern of mine as to how people are using the SAFE material. I prayerfully hope that everyone has the understanding that SAFE is 'not intended for use' apart from Christ as its undying theme, the Bible as its guide and the church as its chief administrator."  (Joey Carroll, SAFE Director)

There will be a SAFE Conference October 28 & 29. The course objectives are:

  • Understand SAFE objectives and course material
  • Review new updates to material
  • Understand tools necessary to bring about permanent change in people
  • Effectively facilitate SAFE program.
