MISSIONARY MOMENTS

October 17-23, 2011

"RAND CARRUTH," a worker in South Asia, is praising God for "Bijoy," a friend who chose to follow Jesus on Easter. The 18-year-old former Hindu rejected the worship of other gods. Five days earlier, Rand had the privilege of sharing a tract and his story of faith with three carpenters. They were building and installing a kitchen cabinet, and Rand  saw that Bijoy was particularly interested. Bijoy sat on the kitchen floor and listened as Rand spoke. On the last day of the job, Bijoy told Rand that he wanted to have the kind of relationship with Jesus that Rand described. They made plans to meet again on Easter, and that day they knelt and prayed during the most important decision Bijoy would ever make. People around the world are responding to the Gospel, thanks in part to your faithful participation in CP. Pray for Rand and Bijoy today.

A former Msulim, North American Mission Board missionary NADEEM QAZI's conversation to Christianity set his life on a path of sharing his faith no matter the cost. Following years of ministry in Pakistan and escalating danger, Nadeem and his wife, JAMILA, escaped to Canada. Today they serve in Toronto, one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America. The Qazis reach out to South Asians and other internationals living in North America with the help of your faithful support of missions through CP and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Pray for Nadeem and Jamila as they serve Christ in this major Canadian city.

Children in Need

At the end of 2010, 424,000 children in the U.S. lived in the foster care system. Of that amount, 23% have been in foster care for more than three years while 11% have been in the system more than five years. How can your church reach out to serve and minister to the children in need here in the U.S.?

MENTORING IN LEADERSHIP - PART TWO

mentoringMaking Disciples: Jesus' Command

Not long prior to Jesus' return to His Father, He met His followers on a mountainside in Galilee. There, He gave them these marching orders:

"Then Jesus came near and said to them, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age'" (Matthew 28:18-20)

If making disciples is imperative, we must understand what the phrase actually means. It's a two-sided coin. On one side is an invitation to enter into a relationship with the Master, Jesus, and follow His teachings. This step is what we sometimes call "conversion," when we turn from our sin and trust Christ for salvation. That conversion is publicly illustrated by the act of baptism.

On the other side of the coin is a call to Christian growth through obeying (or "observing") everything Jesus commanded us to do. We often call this process "discipleship." Those who choose to walk in Jesus' path will know and follow His teachings-including His order to teach others His commands. Therefore, making disciples should result in more disciples who make even more disciples.

Here's how one scholar describes this two-sided coin of discipleship: "If those outside of the faith aren't hearing the gospel and being challenged to make a decision for Christ, then the church has disobeyed one part of Jesus' commission. If new converts aren't faithfully and lovingly nurtured in the whole counsel of God's revelation, then the church has disobeyed the other part."[1]

It's the "other part" that's the focus here. If we must follow Jesus' teachings, how do new believers know those teachings? How will they learn about Christian standards for relationships, morality, or giving? How will they know what Jesus expects? There's only one answer: Someone must teach them. We can't expect untaught believers to obey commands they don't know. Mentors who make disciples are necessary in the church, and equally important are believers who desire to be mentored in their walk with Jesus.

Think about the church you attend, are they better at evangelizing or discipling?

SAFE MINISTRIES

SAFE"It is always a great concern of mine as to how people are using the SAFE material. I prayerfully hope that everyone has the understanding that SAFE is 'not intended for use' apart from Christ as its undying theme, the Bible as its guide and the church as its chief administrator."  (Joey Carroll, SAFE Director)

There will be a SAFE Conference October 28 & 29. The course objectives are:
