MISSIONARY MOMENTS
October 10-16, 2011
From a home base in Memphis, Tennessee, North American missionaries JON and LINDA HODGE serve with the Student Volunteer Mobilization team at the North American Mission Board. Being responsible for the logistics for over a dozen World Changer projects in Mississippi, Arkansas, Southern Illinois, Middle Tennessee, and Alaska rarely leads to a boring day. During the summer of 2010, World Changers celebrated its 20th anniversary and has involved over 300,000 students since 1990. More than 20,000 homes have been refurbished thanks to these students, their sponsors, and your commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program. Pray for the Hodges as they continue to mobilize students to serve in programs like World Changers and Power Plant that reach out and touch our communities in practical ways.

"VANCE and BRENDA KIRKER" serve as team strategy leaders among the Muslims of northern India. Since the fall of 2004, they have trained and encouraged Indians in how to reach the Muslims of Lucknow with the Good News of Jesus Christ. So far, about 250 Muslims have become followers of Jesus, and about 35 were baptized in April 2010. They have recently completed a training course on how to reach Muslims in northern India. God is blessing your commitment to missions through CP to spreak the Gospel among the unbelievers of India. Vance and Brenda value your prayers and your partnership in this effort. Please remember them and the new bellievers in your prayers this week. |
Give hope. End hunger.
In many ways, the United States is a land of plenty. But for 49 million Americans, hunger is a daily reality. At least 1 in 6 Americans, including 1 in 4 children, don't have enough food. Many families are forced to choose between buying food or paying their mortgage each month. Your gifts to the Domestic Hunger Fund allow missionaries and ministries in North America to meet the most basic needs of those around them in an effort to meet their ultimate need for Jesus Christ.

MENTORING IN LEADERSHIP
Think about people who have invited you to walk through a season of life with them. They invested themselves in your life. They gave up their time and gave of themselves. While not all invested the same level of time and energy, they all made a difference in your world, and that's why you remember them.
Who has invested in and influenced your life?
How would you describe their motivation for investing in you?
As you think on the above statement and questions. I wanted you to know that for the next few weeks I will be talking about mentorship in your leadership.
So what do I mean by mentorship?
"A God-given relationship in which one growing Christian encourages and equips another believer to reach his/her potential as a disciple of Christ."
That being said, I want to explain that there are several key elements to mentorship: view/download
- Mentoring is about relationships.
- Mentoring builds on divine intersections.
- Mentoring requires a growing Christian.
- Mentoring is a balance of encouraging and equipping.
- Mentoring is about transformation.
- Mentoring crosses generations.
- Mentoring is done by those who are spiritually mature.
- Mentoring requires self-control.
Why Does Mentoring Matter?
Most church discipleship ministries are organized programmatically. That is, they center on or around small groups and directed Bible studies. Their success is often based on numbers attending. But this model misses the most obvious New Testament means of disciple-making: one-on-one, face-to-face mentoring. We should still invest our time and ourselves in this basic, relational model for many reasons.
Mentoring is biblical.
Jesus produced disciples by investing first in a group of 12 men and then, more pointedly, in three of those men. He called them to be with Him, taught them, empowered them, prayed before them, sent them out, challenged them, called them to account, and even fixed a meal for them. They in turn became leaders in the early church.
The apostle Paul followed Jesus' model by pouring his life into a few young men such as Timothy. This young protégé watched Paul minister, walked in his shadow, rejoiced with him when lives were changed, and prayed for him when he was persecuted. What joy Paul must have felt knowing that after he was gone, Timothy would carry on the work of spreading the gospel.
Mentoring reinforces the truth of the Word.
When we watch our mentors share their faith, we're more likely to share our own faith. Spouses with Godly marriages give us the invaluable gift of seeing Christian homes in motion. Life becomes an effective classroom. We get to see in action what we hear in the Word. Many of God's truths have come to life for me within the context of watching somebody else.
Mentoring requires the mentor to guard his or her life against the enemy's attacks.
If you choose to be a Christian mentor, you'll wear a bull's eye on your back for Satan. If he can seriously wound the mentor, those who follow will bear the scars of that fall. Never does a mentor fall without a ripple effect. Understanding that, if you choose to be a mentor, you must guard yourself.

- In most cases, your local police department will only provide arrest records from your town. Records from Sex Offender Registries, the state and surrounding towns will not be included.
- Police departments only store arrest records. These are not an accurate representation of an individual's criminal record. Criminal convictions, which are an accurate representation of criminal records, are stored at the county courthouse.
So what are you to do? The best place to look for the most up-to-date records is at the county courthouse. A good rule of thumb is to search the county courthouse where the applicant currently lives, but best-practice tells us to look at an applicant's 7-year address history and check those courthouses if your budget allows.
You can greatly expand the geographical search by combining the county courthouse search with our US OneSEARCH® or US OneVERIFY products. These products are inexpensive and include a nationwide sex offender scan at no additional charge.

SAFE MINISTRIES
"It is always a great concern of mine as to how people are using the SAFE material. I prayerfully hope that everyone has the understanding that SAFE is 'not intended for use' apart from Christ as its undying theme, the Bible as its guide and the church as its chief administrator." (Joey Carroll, SAFE Director)
There will be a SAFE Conference October 28 & 29. The course objectives are:
- Understand SAFE objectives and course material
- Review new updates to material
- Understand tools necessary to bring about permanent change in people
- Effectively facilitate SAFE program.
