MI SSIONARY MOMENTS

September 12-18, 2011

North American missionaries JON and MINDY JAMISON serve as directors of the Friendship Baptist Center in inner-city Des Moines, Iowa. The ministry center strives to meet needs in Jesus' name by offering after school, youth, and ESL programs; Bible studies; clothing and food closets; and summer camps to reach the mission field around them. Ministry centers are just one way you are putting love in action as you faithfully participate in the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.  Take a moment and lift up the Jamisons as they direct this ministry. Pray for the hearts of the people to be receptive toward God's Spirit drawing them to Christ.

"ROCHELLE HULLETT" serves in South Asia with her husband, "ARCHER," who is a church planter/trainer catalyst. After completing a three-year ISC term in May 2009, they returned as career missionaries. "We love the Sinhalese people and are currently 'immersed' in a small village where no one speaks English," writes Rochelle. "This has allowed us to become part of the Sinhalese community." Archer often rides his bicycle to town, and recently he met an old man who shared his life story. Archer affectionately listened, held his hand, and shared the Gospel. The old man had tears in his eyes as he listened and said, "No tourist has ever touched me before." A listening ear, a gentle touch, and the truth shared in their heart language are just a few of the fruits from your participation in CP. Pray for this elderly man, the Sinhalese people, and the Hulletts today.

INTERCESSION IGNITED

Pray for disaster victims

Many are still reeling in the aftermath of the summer's tornados and floods. Pray for churches in the south and Midwest that are caring for their communities and congregations. Go to;

www.namb.net//disaster-relief-donations

to give directly to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. You can also text "NAMBDR" to the number "40579" to make a one-time donation of $10.

Pray for church planters

Pray for church planters like Ellis Prince (Gallery Church in Baltimore) who asks for "eyes to see what God has for us to do" and that "we are victorious in the fight for unity in our church." Areas such as Baltimore and other northeastern cities are the centers of influence for the country. The church planters there are on the frontlines of exciting and difficult opportunities for the gospel.

Pray for schools in your community

Pray for administrators, teachers, students and the parents in your neighborhood or those you might meet at school functions.  Pray for opportunities to represent Christ through your words, involvement and even through your kids' schools and that, above all, God would be honored and glorified as children learn about His amazing world.

LEADERSHIP

Complication Number Five:

"Some of the people I'm supposed to be managing are my friends."

Leaders have noted that in times of confrontation, when held accountable for their actions, employees often turn around and protest, "But I thought we were friends!" Well, this might be true. However, if they are a paid employee, this is what one should say in response to this logic. "Hey, next week, we are not going to pay you, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to come in and work really hard anyway to make me look good...you know, since we are such good friends." Now, we all know what the answer would be, and for some this whole scenario seems ludicrous. Maybe so, but it happens more often than not when we have been given an opportunity to manage people and some of those people are our friends.

Reality - Often people become friends in the course of working together. Other times the friendship predates the working relationship. Either way, it can be hard to separate your role as boss from your role as friend. But you have to do it anyway.

This is where we need to begin when facing this complication:

  1. Decide which is more important to you. If the friendship is more important; maybe you shouldn't be the boss. Accept the fact that your role as a boss might compromise or damage the friendship. Maybe you'll decide that you cannot risk your friendship and cannot work with that friend at all; or maybe you'll decide that you cannot risk your friendship, and thus you don't want to be your friend's boss.
  2. Protect the friendship by establishing ground rules that keep the roles separate. "Our friendship is very important to me. My job is also very important to me, and around here I am the boss. When we are here at work, I need to be the boss. When we are outside of work, we try to leave that behind."
  3. Protect the friendship by being a good boss. Make sure things go really well at work. Minimize the number of problems, and you will minimize the number of potential conflicts in your personal relationship.
  4. Recognize and embrace the fact that the work you and your friend have in common will become more and more the terrain of your friendship. That's okay. With any luck, you will both find the work you share to be interesting and important. If your friendship developed at work in the first place, the work you have in common was your original connection anyway. If your friendship predates the work relationship, then your relationship is going to change.

Fact - As much as you try to keep work separate from your friendship and your friendship separate from your work, the boundaries will always be fuzzy. The best you can do is honor your friendship by being a great boss and hope that your friend will honor your friendship by letting you do that to the best of your ability.

It's okay to be boss!

Update on Cecil Sims from his son, Jamie.

Dad had his first appointment with the oncologist September 9 and we finally got the results back from the biopsy that was taken last Monday. In short, the cancer that is on the lung is not lung cancer; it shows to be a melanoma - or skin cancer. We can't know for sure, but it's possible that the source is from some of the skin cancers that dad has had removed from his head over the last several years.

The doctor did tell us clearly what we had already been told - that the cancer in his body is too far advanced to be curable. Going forward the emphasis will be on what is going on with the spots in Dad's head which are the source of his weakness and balance issues. The doctor has ordered another MRI to take place approximately two weeks from now (still waiting on an exact date). They will compare the new MRI with the one taken right after Dad was admitted to the hospital in an effort to see if: 1) the large spot on/near the cerebellum is active or growing; 2) the spot is in fact a tumor.

If the spot is NOT a tumor, then the doctor is leaning toward dad having had a hemorrhagic stroke - bleeding from the spot which caused dad's episode. The Doctor said that these types of strokes can take a while to recover from and that the physical therapy that Dad is going through (more on that in a moment) is the best course of action.

If the large spot IS a tumor there are a couple possible treatments, the most likely of which is radiation but he also mentioned another kind of "biological" treatment which is relatively new and quite frankly way over my head. Regardless the point would be to reduce the tumor in size in an effort to alleviate the problems it is causing dad.

So what about the rest of the body? Clearly the treatment emphasis is on the spots in the head not on what is in Dad's torso - largely because even though the spots in his body are advanced, they are not causing dad to have any symptoms. The fact that there are no symptoms in the body and that the cancer is advanced leads the doctor to believe that the cancer is a fairly slow moving cancer and that if Dad can get stronger and improve enough to go home that he could be around "a couple years". Please understand that this is not really an official diagnosis but one that I think the doctor is hopeful of.

In the meantime Dad is in a rehabilitation center a couple miles from home. He goes through physical therapy twice a day which thoroughly wears him out but we believe he is making some solid improvements. He walked 150 feet today with just a belt around him that the therapists use to keep him from falling. I don't think he could have done that a week ago. He still has balance issues but claims he is not having the same level of vertigo that he had originally.

We as a family are touched by the outpouring of love and support that so many of you have expressed. We continue to covet your prayers for Dad and the family. While there are many things to do on this end, we will try to send news of any significant updates as the occur.

Thank you for love and concern,

The Sims Family

SAFE MINISTRIES

SAFEIn recent days SAFE Ministries has been going through reorganization. After talking with Director Joey Carroll, he has indicated they would like to sell the property in LaCenter, WA. In a letter received from Joey, they are offering the property, including the house, to the Association for $275,000. The Association is obviously not in a position to purchase the property, but asked if we could share this information with other churches or non-profit organizations who might consider buying it for the same price. If you are interested, please contact the IBA office 503.452.2930 or Joey Carroll, 360.687.0720.

ISBDR TRAINING

There will be training for ISBDR on Saturday, September 24th, 2011 from 9:00am - 1:00pm at Quincy Baptist Church (the corner of F St Se & 3rd Ave SE in Quincy WA.

This is a perfect opportunity for people who would like to get involved with Disaster Relief to get started. If you need to get current on your ISBDR Certificate, this is would be the perfect time.

ISBDR is a required course for all Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers. More than 85,000 SBC volunteers have prepared themselves to assist during a crisis event. This class explores the many aspects of Disaster Relief, the motivation behind SBC Disaster Relief, what defines an occurrence as a disaster and the many types of services or ministries that are available through this ministry. You will learn how individuals, churches and associations are organized to work together and coordinate a response with partner organizations such as the American Red Cross.

Southern Baptist churches, associations, and state conventions have purchased vehicles and equipment. One area that has assisted Southern Baptist Disaster Relief in becoming one of the top disaster response organizations in the world can be traced back to the training of volunteers.  State Baptist convention leaders invest many hours and dollars to provide appropriate disaster relief training. Every three years volunteers are asked to participate in retraining with new equipment, procedures, and leaders.
