MI SSIONARY MOMENTS

September 5 - 11, 2011

"DONALD McKINNEY"  serves as the urban strategy team leader for a large city in India. He and his wife, 'HELEN,"  have many Hindu friends who live in blue tarp tents without water, bathrooms, or electricity. Many are hungry, and drunken husbands are common. Yet God saved a poverty-stricken Hindu construction worker named "Vena" in their living room. Though often beaten by her husband, Vena comes regularly for prayer and Bible stories. Their city of 7-plus million people has temples, idols, mosques, gurus, miltiple gods, and manu priests. The McKinneys train new believers to tell their testimonies, give Gospel stories, and start house churches. Vena has many friends and family members who need to know Jesus. Your prayers and participation in the Cooperative Program are opening doors and hearts in this populous country. Pray for Vena to grow in Christ and be hold in her witness.

North American missionaries MARVIN and SUE OWEN work with churches throughout Wyoming to encourage missions involvement and coordinate mission teams. With the help of your prayers and your commitment to putting  love in action through CP, Marvin works with disaster and hunger relief efforts among various ministries to share the love of Christ with the approximately 95% of the population who do not know Christ. Much of the western United States is underserved when it comes to Bible believing, evangelical churches. Pray for the vast lostness of Wyoming. Ask God to raise up congregations who will be faithful in proclaiming His Word and sharing His love.

LEADERSHIP

ACCOUNTABILITY COMPLICATION FOUR:

"I'm a brand-new leader...or brand new to the team."

You finally received the promotion or opportunity that you were hoping for, or maybe one you didn't even realize was coming your way. You are still a member of the team; the only difference is, you are in charge now. You now are managing people who were your peers yesterday, and today they are supposed to treat you like the boss. Then the question comes, "How do I get them to respect my authority?"

Fact: Just because you are now the leader, it does not give you the right to be a jerk. However, you do have to take charge!

Do not make the mistake of justifying why you are now the leader. Take charge and explain what your expectation are and hold those you manage accountable to them. When you get an opportunity to lead and now all of sudden you're the boss, you really only have two choices:

  1. Behave in such a way that those around you wonder why you are now in leadership instead of them.
  2. Behave in such a way that the answer to that question is so obvious that nobody would ever wonder.

Communicate clearly, and hold them accountable for their actions - tie their performance to rewards and detriments every step of the way. For you are the leader, be someone that they can follow!

It's okay to be the boss!

REMEMBERING 9/11

9/11

A Congregational Blessing

for First Responders

Almighty God, we ask your blessings on our fellow Americans who stand ready day and night to answer our calls for help.

Our Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Emergency Medical Technicians, 911 Operators, and all other First Responders.

Bless them with courage and strength to meet the challenges of each day.

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Bless them with wisdom and discernment for the critical decisions they must make.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Bless their skills, their training, and their devotion to duty.

Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Bless them with the assurance of your presence no matter how isolated they may feel.

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.

Almighty God, we pray that you will shield them with divine protection.

Protect their mind from stress,

Shield them with peace.

Protect their body from injury,

Shield them with well being.

Protect their heart from callousness,

Shield them with faith.

Protect their soul from depression,

Shield them with joy.

Reward them for their service.

Care for their families and loved ones.

Increase their number we pray.

To all Emergency Services Personnel present with us today we say

"Thank you!"

To all those on duty today we say

"Thank you!"

To all those retired or disabled we say

"Job well done. Thank you!"

To all those who have fallen in the line of duty, and to their loved ones we say

"Thank you for your sacrifice!"

Know that your labor is not in vain. You are deeply appreciated by those you serve.

We depend on you. We are grateful to you. We thank God for you.

O righteous God, who searches minds and hearts, bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure.

To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy- to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST
Prayer

Cecil Sims, longtime pastor, leader, and former Executive Director of the NWBC, was taken to Legacy Meridian Park Hospital by an emergency crew, August 24. The emergency crew was called because of serious health issues that hit Cecil late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. After examination by several doctors, Cecil was diagnosed with serious occasions of cancer. Cancer was discovered in his brain, both lungs, and his kidneys. He has been in the ICU unit of the hospital. Physicians are planning to conduct several biopsies in the next few days to determine the strength of the cancer and any potential for relief or cure. Dr. Bill Crews and his wife Jo Ann visited Cecil in the ICU unit of Meridian Park Hospital and had a time of prayer with Cecil as he continues in the ICU unit. All believers are encouraged to fervently pray for Cecil, his wife Jeannine and their family.

SAFE MINISTRIES

SAFEIn recent days SAFE Ministries has been going through reorganization. After talking with Director Joey Carroll, he has indicated they would like to sell the property in LaCenter, WA. In a letter received from Joey, they are offering the property, including the house, to the Association for $275,000. The Association is obviously not in a position to purchase the property, but asked if we could share this information with other churches or non-profit organizations who might consider buying it for the same price. If you are interested, please contact the IBA office 503.452.2930 or Joey Carroll, 360.687.0720.

MEN OF SIMPLICITY (MOS):

A ministry of Simplicity Ministries

Pastor, would you like to see the men of your church living their lives simply and purely devoted to Christ? Would you like to see men becoming the divinely appointed leaders they are called to be? Do you need a plan and a partner to equip men to this end? Mike Thibodeaux, Simplicity Ministries, has for the past two years been leading men (Men of Simplicity) in the East Portland/Gresham area on Monday nights doing just this, and are beginning their third year.  Through a 12 month format of large group teaching sessions and small group discussion times, men are connecting to God and each other with transformational results. If you would like to involve a group of men from your church in this Monday night meeting or have Mike speak at a men's event call: 971.219.6964 or e-mail: [email protected].

DISASTER RELIEF "AUTUMN TRAINING"

  • September 9th, 2011
    •     SBC Chaplain Training
      • Some have asked, "What training and experience do I need to serve the Lord as a Chaplain in Disaster Relief?.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) Chaplaincy Training will prepare a team member to deploy anywhere in the Northwest. Volunteers who have completed the SBDR Chaplaincy Training and desire to be deployed nationally as well as around the Northwest will need the addition Critical Intervention Stress Management (CISM) Training offered in October.  Both courses call for 12 to 13 hours of classroom instruction.

    •     Incident Command System (ICS)
      • ICS is a disaster management team that effectively directs and coordinates a disaster response.  In the event of a disaster in the Northwest (requiring significant resources) the state director may call together the ICS team to coordinate the DR teams.  ICS requires 12 to 14 hours of classroom instruction.  Those volunteers trained and experienced in ICS may be called out to serve nationally.
  • October 28th - 29th, 2011
    • CISM Training - Chaplaincy training
    • Incident Command System (ICS)
    • ServSafe
      • This is an advanced course on food safety and is nationally recognized (valuable for deployment in all states).  ServSafe manuals need to be preordered so participants can begin studying prior to the first day of class.

All training will take place at:

Camp Touchet

1130 N Touchet Road

Dayton WA 99328

ISBDR TRAINING

There will be training for ISBDR on Saturday, September 24th, 2011 from 9:00am - 1:00pm at Quincy Baptist Church (the corner of F St Se & 3rd Ave SE in Quincy WA.

This is a perfect opportunity for people who would like to get involved with Disaster Relief to get started. If you need to get current on your ISBDR Certificate, this is would be the perfect time.

ISBDR is a required course for all Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers. More than 85,000 SBC volunteers have prepared themselves to assist during a crisis event. This class explores the many aspects of Disaster Relief, the motivation behind SBC Disaster Relief, what defines an occurrence as a disaster and the many types of services or ministries that are available through this ministry. You will learn how individuals, churches and associations are organized to work together and coordinate a response with partner organizations such as the American Red Cross.

Southern Baptist churches, associations, and state conventions have purchased vehicles and equipment. One area that has assisted Southern Baptist Disaster Relief in becoming one of the top disaster response organizations in the world can be traced back to the training of volunteers.  State Baptist convention leaders invest many hours and dollars to provide appropriate disaster relief training. Every three years volunteers are asked to participate in retraining with new equipment, procedures, and leaders.
