MI SSIONARY MOMENTS

August 22-28, 2011

MOHAMMED grew up in a Muslim home. He attended mosque every week and followed the Koran.  Yet, he found that all the things he'd been doing were empty. He met some American college students who told him about Christ. Mohammed became passionate to know this Christ. The following summer more students came, and they also told Mohammed about Christ. Mohammed accepted the Truth and was saved! Mohammed wanted evryone to know, but it was illegal to convert to Christianity. If he were to tell anyone - even his parents - his life would be in danger. So he came up with a way to share his faith. He started an English club for people who wanted to practice the language, but Mohammed uses it as a time to share his faith. You played a part in this as you prayed and participated in CP. Please pray for Mohammed and others like him.

North American missionaries CHARLIE and CYNTHIA MINNEY serve the Coalfields Baptist Association in West Logan, West Virginia. Charlie works with church planters to start new churches, as well as working with existing churches to develop and accomplish missions goals for the association. The spiritual and physical needs in West Virginia are great, and Charlie understands that he cannot do what needs to be done by himself. But with our prayers and our continued support of missions through the Cooperative Program, he can lead local pastors and their congregations to rise up and accomplish all that God wants done. Pray that God will use the Minneys and the churches in West Virginia to meet the vast needs, physical and spiritual, of the people living in their area.

LEADERSHIP

ACCOUNTABILITY COMPLICATION TWO:
"Some other work obligations got in the way."

In many organizations and churches, leaders often have to manage people who have more than one boss. I know this might seem like an elementary statement, but the reality of it all is that whether it is an employee or a volunteer you have or will compete for that person's time and energy.

This being the case, when you give an employee or volunteer an assignment that has more than one boss competing for their attention, it is not always clear how many other assignments that person is juggling or whether an "urgent" assignment from another boss will interfere. So, how can you hold them accountable?

  • Be the boss who is most engaged and you will be the boss to whom they are most responsive. If they know you will follow-up, monitor, measure, document, and insist on accountability, they will always put assignments for you first.
  • Be the boss who sets up employees for success and rewards them accordingly.
  • Be the boss who understands what other projects your employee is juggling for other managers. Ask lots of questions about their other tasks and deadlines. Decide together whether if they will be able to meet your requirements. Make a plan for how they will respond if any other responsibility interferes with meeting your deadline or meeting your requirements.
  • Be the boss who sets higher expectations, standards, and requirements. Make it a point of pride. Let the people on your team appreciate your especially high standards.

Who are you holding accountable today, and who is holding you accountable?

3 REASONS PEOPLE DON'T GIVE

There are lots of reasons people today don't give. Let's take a few moments and look at three common reasons.

  1. People don't know how the church differs from other charitable organizations. Many church goers were not raised in families that went to church, so giving isn't natural. They view the church a lot like other charitable organizations and target their discretionary money toward the organization or organizations of their choice. With limited discretionary money and many charitable options, people often choose to give to other organizations.
  2. People don't understand the communal nature of the church. Acts 2 shows us how the church was organized at its inception. People did life together and everyone took part. Today, many churches present themselves as shows to be watched and have abandoned the community building responsibility given to the church in Acts 2. Because people do little other than attend and aren't encouraged to do anything more, giving is viewed as optional.
  3. At their core, people are consumers. People today are looking for personal benefit and gain. They value achievement and fulfillment more than their relationship with God. They put their money toward the things that are most fulfilling. Attending church doesn't make the cut. They vacation at the beach, buy cars, and remodel their homes. Those are fulfilling. Watching church is just something to do.  The next generation of givers will not come from the spectators in your congregation. It will come from the people who are engaged in life-changing community.

What are you doing to move people into biblical community?

IBA Girls Camp 2011 Report

Girl's Camp 2011Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and Love your neighbor as yourself. . . .  Do this and you will live.   Luke 10:27-28

Sunday afternoon, July 31, our volunteer staff arrived to prepare for girls camp. We planned, prepared and prayed together in anticipation of the arrival of our campers.

58 campers, 4 Teens on Mission and 28 adult staff representing 16 churches attended camp. Some of our activities included crafts, making a sensational snack, making cards for our troops, blankets for missions, producing videos, Speed Stacking and going on a nature walk. Our afternoons included water play, games and crafts.

Our theme was Live Love.  Each morning we spent a few minutes of Quiet Time, alone with God before beginning each day. We worshiped, prayed, learned and played together.  Our daily themes were "It All Began with Love" "Just for Me," "True Love," and "Live Love." We learned how God wants us to Love God, Love Others and Live Love each day.

Our worship speaker, Karla Inman, spoke each evening. We had a Creation Celebration emphasizing God's love for us, learned about The Armor of God, the importance of reading the Bible for ourselves, and the importance of having our own personal relationship with Jesus.

Our camp missionary, Pam Smith, Ministry Evangelism consultant with the North American Mission Board in Montana, shared her mission experiences with our girls each day.  She taught about serving in Montana and the needs of those who live there, including Montana Indian children in need of food. A mission offering of $400.23 was collected for the Montana Hunger Fund.

Lifeway donated Bibles to us, so we were able to provide new Holman Bibles to a number of girls who needed a Bible of their own.

Six campers made salvation decisions, one rededicated her life to Christ, and others had questions or needed encouragement. Thursday we gave those girls the opportunity to discuss their decisions in a follow-up session. Praise God for the opportunity to be a part of these life-changing decisions.

Blessings,

DISASTER RELIEF "AUTUMN TRAINING"

  • September 9th, 2011
    •     SBC Chaplain Training
      • Some have asked, "What training and experience do I need to serve the Lord as a Chaplain in Disaster Relief?.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) Chaplaincy Training will prepare a team member to deploy anywhere in the Northwest. Volunteers who have completed the SBDR Chaplaincy Training and desire to be deployed nationally as well as around the Northwest will need the addition Critical Intervention Stress Management (CISM) Training offered in October.  Both courses call for 12 to 13 hours of classroom instruction.

    •     Incident Command System (ICS)
      • ICS is a disaster management team that effectively directs and coordinates a disaster response.  In the event of a disaster in the Northwest (requiring significant resources) the state director may call together the ICS team to coordinate the DR teams.  ICS requires 12 to 14 hours of classroom instruction.  Those volunteers trained and experienced in ICS may be called out to serve nationally.
  • October 28th - 29th, 2011
    • CISM Training - Chaplaincy training
    • Incident Command System (ICS)
    • ServSafe
      • This is an advanced course on food safety and is nationally recognized (valuable for deployment in all states).  ServSafe manuals need to be preordered so participants can begin studying prior to the first day of class.

All training will take place at:

Camp Touchet

1130 N Touchet Road

Dayton WA 99328
