MI SSIONARY MOMENTS

August 15-21, 2011

LARRY  and  JOAN THEISEN caught  a vision for church planting and associational missions while Larry was serving as pastor of a small church in Pennsylvania. As a North American missionary serving as associational director of missions for Keystone Baptist Association, Larry is helping churches reach beyond their walls into their communities. He does this by trainng church leaders, members, and encouraging pastors and existing churches to be aware of the need for new churches in surrounding areas. True revival is long overdue. Your prayers and your continued participation in CP can facilitate this undertaking. Pray for a spiritual awakening to break out in your life, your church, and in the Keystone Association.

Polish-born missionary GEORGE RATZ serves in Philadelphia as a special ministries missionary. His wife, ANNA, is from the Czech Republic. Their backgrounds, including George's ability to speak five languages, help them to share the Gospel with seafarers from all over the world who come into the Port of Philadelphia. The sailors come to port to deliver their wares and for some much needed down time, but many of them leave with the greatest gift they've ever received, a personal relationship with Christ. Your gifts, given through your church and then forwarded through CP, enable George and Anna to deliver God's gift to all those who sail into the Port of Philadelphia. Please take a few minutes this week to pray for Anna and George and for the sailors they meet every day.

LEADERSHIP

ACCOUNTABILITY COMPLICATION ONE:
"I'm waiting for so-and-so or such-and-such."

Sometimes when you ask an employee or volunteer to account for their actions, they will start blaming others.  Sometimes the person has every right to do so.  In today's complex would, a person usually will work closely with others and/or the whole department, not to mention outsiders like customers and vendors.

Question: "How can I fairly hold an employee or volunteer accountable if they legitimately are held up by someone else?"

Reality says:

  1. Focus on the tasks your employee can accomplish on her own, without depending on anyone else.  You have to accurately define all the steps  they can and should take leading up to the point where they have to rely on someone else.  Then evaluate how well they accomplished those tasks.
  2. Consider how your employee is handling the people they depend upon to accomplish their tasks.  You can teach them how to interact more effectively with these people and get more of what she needs from them - and faster.
  3. If others or an outsider is holding up your employee's work, spell out exactly what you expect them to do during that waiting period.  Help them to make a plan to reduce downtime, maintain productivity, and continue moving the project along.

Fact:  You simply cannot hold a person accountable for the actions of another person.  But you can help your people better handle these difficult situations and keep the accountability process going by staying focused on concrete actions that are within their control.

SDA
3 REASONS PEOPLE DON'T GIVE

There are lots of reasons people today don't give. Let's take a few moments and look at three common reasons.

  1. People don't know how the church differs from other charitable organizations. Many church goers were not raised in families that went to church, so giving isn't natural. They view the church a lot like other charitable organizations and target their discretionary money toward the organization or organizations of their choice. With limited discretionary money and many charitable options, people often choose to give to other organizations.
  2. People don't understand the communal nature of the church. Acts 2 shows us how the church was organized at its inception. People did life together and everyone took part. Today, many churches present themselves as shows to be watched and have abandoned the community building responsibility given to the church in Acts 2. Because people do little other than attend and aren't encouraged to do anything more, giving is viewed as optional.
  3. At their core, people are consumers. People today are looking for personal benefit and gain. They value achievement and fulfillment more than their relationship with God. They put their money toward the things that are most fulfilling. Attending church doesn't make the cut. They vacation at the beach, buy cars, and remodel their homes. Those are fulfilling. Watching church is just something to do.  The next generation of givers will not come from the spectators in your congregation. It will come from the people who are engaged in life-changing community.

What are you doing to move people into biblical community?

MINISTRY AND TECHNOLOGY

Ministry And Google Plus

Google PlusSocial media platforms like FB, Twitter, and YouTube have proven to be very effective tools in helping to carry out the Great Commission of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ! These digital platforms allow for easy connection with increasing numbers of people; great functionality; and global reach!

Google is currently rolling out Google+  (Google Plus), a new social networking platform under the umbrella of the evolving Google brand. Just what we need, right? Another social network!

However, after taking a look at Google+, I'm very happy to report that it has the potential to be an excellent addition to your ministry toolbox! The following are some of the promising highlights of Google+ :

Circles - Great tool for pastors and ministry leaders to establish and communicate with selected groups of individuals, including staff, family, congregation, and each other.

Hangout - Video chat enables meet-ups on the web! Great for video conferencing, small-group and team meetings, and for staying in touch with missionaries in the field.

Instant Upload - Allows for quick and easy sharing of ministry photos and videos!

Sparks - Pushes connections to interesting online links, e.g., related websites, educational resources, etc.

Huddle - Enables group texting all on one page.  Great for staff and small group communications!

Connect to Google apps - Provides easy access to a suite of Google productivity tools which many churches and ministries are already using, including Gmail, Docs, Reader, and Calender!

What's missing? It would be fantastic if Google+ would allow churches and ministries to set up their own official pages. Hopefully, someone at Google is reading this!

Google+ can definitely be a great tool for ministries to use to help plan, strategize, and maximize their social media efforts in sharing the gospel; improving internal communications; and increasing ministry awareness!

VOLUNTEER REQUEST - Japan 2011

General Description of Need and Project

This team will be working with SBC and other GCC (Great Commission Church) partners in various construction projects. They will go into various devastated towns, villages, and/or cities in the affected areas along the Miyagi Coast to help with various carpentry jobs and needed repairs. Specifically, they will do light framing, hang sheet rock, put in sub-flooring, OBS weather proofing, and oriented strand board. In the process they will be encouraged to meet and assist people, befriend them, make contact to encourage them, and the need for skilled carpenters. These teams will remain flexible and ready to fill specific DR needs as determined by Tohoku Care (Japan Baptist Disaster Relief) as time and the situation require.

Specific Type of Work to be completed

Although the members of this team are being requested because of their carpentry skills to do light framing, hang sheet rock, put in sub-flooring, OBS weather proofing, and oriented strand board, these teams will remain flexible and ready to fill specific DR needs as determined by Tohoku Care (Japan Baptist Disaster Relief). As time and the situation require, they should be prepared to do whatever is necessary to meet people in the affected areas and assist by doing such activities as mud-outs, cleaning houses, streets, parks, public areas, delivering relief supplies, meeting particular needs, and encouraging disaster victims, etc. Team members should be alert to help identify needs for potential future volunteer ministries. The needs in the affected communities constantly change; therefore, the team must be very flexible, ready to do whatever is needed or whatever is requested. Tohoku Care is working to establish trust relationships with the various communities and with local leaders for long term relationships. We expect to work in conjunction with Sendai area churches for long term follow-up.

MINISTRY REVIEW

The Griffins have answered the call of the Lord to the ministry of music, and are dedicated to proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song.  We believe the world we live in today is in desperate need of the encouraging and saving message of Christ and His promise of eternal life through salvation.  We are blessed and honored to be given the opportunity to bring encouragement to those who know the Lord and more importantly, to use music to reach those who have not yet experienced the joy of those who are saved by grace.

The Griffins bring musical background of more than four decades to their ministry.  Together the trio's close harmonies and worshipful melodies combine to be musical salt and light to a world still searching for answers to the ultimate questions of life.  No venue is too large or small.

DISASTER RELIEF "AUTUMN TRAINING"

  • September 9th, 2011
    •     SBC Chaplain Training
      • Some have asked, "What training and experience do I need to serve the Lord as a Chaplain in Disaster Relief?.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) Chaplaincy Training will prepare a team member to deploy anywhere in the Northwest. Volunteers who have completed the SBDR Chaplaincy Training and desire to be deployed nationally as well as around the Northwest will need the addition Critical Intervention Stress Management (CISM) Training offered in October.  Both courses call for 12 to 13 hours of classroom instruction.

    •     Incident Command System (ICS)
      • ICS is a disaster management team that effectively directs and coordinates a disaster response.  In the event of a disaster in the Northwest (requiring significant resources) the state director may call together the ICS team to coordinate the DR teams.  ICS requires 12 to 14 hours of classroom instruction.  Those volunteers trained and experienced in ICS may be called out to serve nationally.
  • October 28th - 29th, 2011
    • CISM Training - Chaplaincy training
    • Incident Command System (ICS)
    • ServSafe
      • This is an advanced course on food safety and is nationally recognized (valuable for deployment in all states).  ServSafe manuals need to be preordered so participants can begin studying prior to the first day of class.

All training will take place at:

Camp Touchet
