MISSIONARY MOMENTS
June 5-12, 2011
VIJAY ALLAMPALLI
and his wife, MADHU wake up every morning and face a daunting task - the growing lostness of New York. As they pray and work to engage the estimated 27 million lost people in the region, they are encouraged by your prayers and your commitment to come alongside them through your participation in the Cooperative Program. Vijay and Madhu serve the Baptist Convention of New York and the surrounding multistate territory through evangelism and church planting strategies. They are confident the harvest is plentiful (Matthew 9:37-38) and ask you to pray with them for the workers to bring in the harvest of souls God is preparing.

"MARK and KELLY KEYS" study their people's language in a small, isolated city in Asia. They chose to settle in this difficult environment in order to live among the one million "X" minority people. This people group has only a few believers and little evangelical witness. Mark previously served in Asia as a journeyman and spoke the national language, so he was able to immediately begin studying the minority language, while Kelly has been working on the national language. Very few "X" people have heard the Gospel in their own language, but thanks in part to your commitment to reaching people through CP and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Mark and Kelly will be among the first people in 2,000 years to share Jesus, disciple, and start churches using their people's heart language. Thank God for this exciting opportunity. Pray for protection and for open doors.

UN-CHURCHED
A study by the Barna Group indicates that 28% of the adult population (over age 25) have not attended any church or church-related activities in the last six months. Nearly four out of 10 of these adults say that though they believe in God, they have opted out of religious activity because of negavite experiences with church in the past.

Top Leadership Myths
#1 - The Myth of Fairness: The way to be fair is to treat everybody the same
Where does this myth come from?
- Human Resources/EEO/Legal Department aversion to any kind of litigation risk has led to a blanket default presumption in the working world that differential treatment of individuals we lead is "against the rules."
- It relates closely to political correctness that causes so many people to self-censor any mention of difference between and among individuals - even observable merit-based differences.
- The underlying theory that because every person has innate value, we should treat everybody the same.
All of this is only fair if you are running a commune!
Since the early 1990s, the self-improvement movement has made an odd shift from "improving" one's self, toward feeling good about one's self, improved or not. The irony is that real human development comes precisely from helping people assess their performance honestly and helping them improve. All the feel good pretend sameness becomes yet another excuse for leaders to avoid monitoring and measuring performance, much less telling people they lead, paid or volunteer, when they failed and helping them improve. When leaders point out failures to individuals, they are often met with resistance or strong emotions: "It's not my fault. Stop picking on me." That's when a lot of leaders second guess themselves and withdraw again. Hiding behind false fairness means that most leaders are unable or unwilling to provide individuals they are leading extra reward when they do go the extra mile.
"A man going on a journey...turned over his possessions to his servants...To the one he gave five talents to another two; and to another, one - to each according to his own ability..."
We need to commend those for their faithful service!
If we have truly defined the terrain on which we have given those we lead the power, that terrain consists of effectively delegated goals, with clear guidelines and concrete deadlines. Consistently articulating with every direct report the appropriate standards and expectations - what to do and how to do it. When it comes to those that are not to be commended or do not deserve the reward we can respond appropriately and fairly.
"Then he who received one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid...I hid you talent in the ground...here take what is yours."
Then came the boss's reply, "you knew me and what I expected from you. I gave you what you could handle based upon your ability and training. So, you should have done what was expected. However, since you could not handle your task and do what was expected I am going to give yours to the man that did his job, and did it well!
Matthew 25:14-30
What's truly fair? Do more for some people and less for others, based upon what they deserve - based upon their performance.

BUSINESS CENTER REVIEW
Google Enhances E-Mail Security in Apps
For those using any Google based app systems (i.e. Google calendar, Google talk, Google docs, Google video chat, Gmail, etc.) will be pleased to hear that Google has taken a step to stop legitimate e-mail messages sent by its Apps customers from getting caught in spam filters. Administrators for Google Apps (www.google.com/apps) can now enable digital signing of those messages, which help recipients verify that the message came from a known vetted sender. |

Seminary Offers Training for Local Pastors and Lay Leaders
By Mark Bradley, Director, Pacific Northwest Campus of Golden Gate Seminary
Pastors and other church leaders in Interstate Baptist Association have a valuable opportunity for seminary training within easy driving distance of their field of service. This was the impetus behind the founding of the Pacific Northwest Campus in 1980. The presence of the seminary in the Portland/Vancouver area has made it possible for many dozens of us to pursue our degrees without needing to move to California or the South. Such was the case for me, as I was elected pastor of Beavercreek Baptist Church the day before I began my Master of Divinity studies, and was able to apply lessons from the classroom to practical ministry week after week throughout my course of study. At our campus we offer every course necessary to earn the Master of Divinity, the Master of Theological Studies, and the Diploma in Theology. The fall semester begins August 22. The admissions application is due July 15. IBA has some scholarship funds for continuing adult education. Contact Brent Pound for more information about that. He can be reached at 503-452-2930 ext 108; 503-421-1802; or brent@interstatebaptist.org. After students have earned 15 credits with us, they also become eligible for scholarships through the Northwest Baptist Foundation.
Our fall schedule of classes is as follows. We'll offer the following courses on Mondays: Intro to Hebrew; Basic Evangelism; Intro to Old Testament I; and Pastoral Ministry. On Tuesdays we'll have Ministry Management and Development; Biblical Hermeneutics; Leadership in Ministry Practicum; Christian Theology I; and Studies in Worship Leadership-Voice. Two courses will have "intensive" schedules (meeting two "weekends," each consisting of a Thursday afternoon, all day Friday, and Saturday morning): Foundations for Ministry; and Historical-Theological Integrative Seminar. All these classes meet at our campus, which we share with the Northwest Baptist Convention, at 3200 NE 109th Avenue, Vancouver, WA.
Lay leaders and teachers may want to consider pursuing the Bible Teaching Certificate. It consists of Intro to Old Testament I and II; Intro to New Testament I and II; and Principles and Approaches to Bible Teaching. That's 5 courses of 15 credits total. If you're available to attend class during the day, you could begin this fall with Intro to Old Testament I on Mondays from 8:00-11:20 a.m. If your work schedule doesn't allow that, all five courses comprising the Bible Teaching Certificate are available online.
Please contact our office with any questions or to begin the application process. You can reach Sonya at 360-882-2200 or pnwc-info@ggbts.edu; or Mark at 509-432-3664 or markb@nwbaptist.org. The seminary website is www.ggbts.edu. |
