MISSIONARY MOMENTS

May 29 - June 5, 2011

For the past five years, STEVE and JUDY ANDERSON have served as boarding home parents in Manila, Philippines. The boarding home is a place where the children of other missionaries live while they are in school. Steve and Judy partner with many Southeast Asian families, whose childen live in Manila. Their role allows them to provide love and care to high school students who do not have their parents close by. "One of the truly exciting things about our work...is the opportunity we have to see students grow in maturity and in their walk with the Lord. They gain avenues of independence that allow them to face life challenges later on," Steve and Judy said. Your support of missions through CP empowers the ministry of our missionaries while providing for their families as well. Pray for the children of our missionaries this week.

Top Leadership Myths

#1 - The Myth of Empowerment:  The way to empower people is to leave them alone and let them manage themselves.

This is false empowerment, the number one myth in the workplace.

What is the reality? Almost everybody performs better with more guidance, direction, and support from a more experienced person.  So why do leaders often second-guess their own instincts to take a stronger hand?  The answer is, they have been in-grained with the mantras of false empowerment.  When these leaders do take charge, people under them often recite these same mantra, complaining. "Don't micromanage me!"

The funny thing is that most cases mistaken for micromanagement turn out to be under management in disguise. For example:

Example one - if a person under your leadership must check with you every step of the way in order to make a very basic decision or take a very simple action.  This is not micromanagement.  If a person you are leading is unable to make very basic decisions or take very simple actions on his/her own, this is almost always because the leader has not prepared them in advance to do so!

Example two - if a person under your leadership makes decisions and takes action without every checking with you, and when you find out about the decision and actions you burn them for taking initiative.  Micromanagement?  No.  This person does not know where his/her discretion begins and ends, that's because the leader has not spelled out guidelines and parameters for the person up front.

So, what is real empowerment?

If you truly want to empower people, then you simply must define the terrain on which they have power.  That terrain consists of effectively delegated goals, with clear guidelines and concrete deadlines.  Consistently articulating with every direct report the appropriate standards and expectations - what to do and how to do it - is the hard work of leading, managing, and supervising.  Within clearly articulated parameters, a direct report has power.  Limited power? Yes. But it also has the great virtue of being real power.

God Bless,

For those using any Google based app systems (i.e. Google calendar, Google talk, Google docs, Google video chat, Gmail, etc.) will be pleased to hear that Google has taken a step to stop legitimate e-mail messages sent by its Apps customers from getting caught in spam filters.  Administrators for Google Apps (www.google.com/apps) can now enable digital signing of those messages, which help recipients verify that the message came from a known vetted sender.
