Making old things new - we are headed in a new direction!

The Nelle Johnson Offering was established to provide funds to enhance our serving  and giving locally and to the world as an Association.

This year's offering will be used as follows:

Leadership Development -

Healthy, growing pastors are essential for developing healthy, growing churches. We would like to develop  SALT (Strengthen Associational Leadership Team)  to support and resource our pastors.

This team focuses on supporting pastors with practical needs during hard times as well as  creating opportunities for training, mentoring, coaching, partner-ships, assessments, consulta-tions, and whatever other means we can access to resource these men of God so they can continue to grow in their ability to lead, equip, preach, and impact their community for God; keeping in mind every pastorate is unique.

IBA Continuing Education Fund - Provides scholarship funds that benefit Northwest Pastors, Pastor's Family and Ministry Leaders to attend seminary, complete under-graduate studies, and etc.

Brochures will be available for distribution to the churches in March.

Offering Goal for 2011:
$7,000.00

This offering can be collected and turned in year round.  We will also have the Associational Week with Nelle Johnson Offering as the emphasis is:

MISSIONARY MOMENTS

May 8 - May 15, 2011

As the regional associational missionary and church planting strategist for Oregon Trail Baptist Association in Nebraska, North American missionary DOUG LEE has opportunities to participate in churches' outreach ministries where he often meets people who have no church connection. Doug helps start new churches and strengthens and empowers existing churches and leaders to be more effective in sharing the Gospel. Disaster relief training and efforts, children's camps, minister retreats, and more are just a few of the fruits from our support of missions through CP. Doug and BRENDA, his wife, request your prayers as they assist pastors, leaders, and churches in their area.

"A" works in the financial support center of Southeast Asia. In addition to hours in the office serving other missionaries, she makes time for sharing the Good News on an unreached university campus. She and other Christian workers meet with the students once a week, helping them with their English, playing games, and most importantly, sharing stories of faith. Recently two young women accepted Christ because of their ministry. "It has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever been a part of," A says. She and fellow workers are also learning stories that originate in Buddhism. These stories act as bridges to the Gospel and have been a strong tool in talking to the nationals. Without your gifts given to the Lord through your church and forwarded through CP, this story might have a totally different ending. Pray for these missionaries and students today.

A WORD FROM OUR MODERATOR

I am happy to report that, as a result of the zone Executive Board meetings of the Association, the decision to call Brent Pound as Executive Director was unanimous. Through the testimony of the pastors and executive board messengers in attendance, we have heard and seen the results of Brent's abilities over the past two years as he served as Church Ministry Strategist and as Interim Director, a position he has held since October of last year.

We have heard from some that it has been a time of "wait and see."  We can now say with certainty that we have determined as an association our direction, we are alive and well! If you were able to attend one of the Executive Board meetings, you heard first-hand some of exciting things that are already taking place.

Here are a few things from the Executive Director's report for the first quarter of 2011:

  • Seven churches are receiving supplemental assistance
  • Six pastors have been given scholarships for their continuing education
  • Working with two church starts by providing assistance with obtaining equipment and also providing administrative assistance through the IBA office
  • Participated in special services in IBA churches (Ordination Service, Installation Service, Challenging Service)
  • Installed new video equipment in one of our rural churches
  • E-source library up and running through our web page
  • Provided Worship Consultation to churches
  • Served as pulpit supply as needed
  • Attended NAMB relations meeting in Atlanta
  • Met with Region 3 leadership team

As you can see, Brent has been busy meeting and working with and on behalf of our churches. My prayer is that we as an association will uphold Brent in prayer, and be supportive of him as he leads us in a new direction.

SWEAT MINISTRIES

It is amazing how individuals especially students love to serve if they are given the opportunity. With projects that are a worthy causes and deserving of their time and effort.  So, I say let them serve in tangible ways!

This summer SWEAT Ministries has two opportunities to serve:

  • The first being an Intrastate Service Project in Vernonia, OR; where we will be assisting a church that has been affected by the past floods.
  • The second will be time of assisting Evergreen Community church in Washington with some building repairs and maintenance.

Both of these opportunities will be a great learning experience for all that participate!  If you are interested in becoming a part of SWEAT Ministries Service Projects please contact Crystal Miller- crystal@sweatministries.org.

PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY

How to keep personal information secure whenever you go online

Privacy

What Happens to Your Data?

When a criminal obtains your e-mail address, credit card, or Social Security number, your information enters an underground economy where it's sold, bought, and (perhaps) eventually used in a crime.

However it's acquired, stolen personal information in aggregated and sold in online criminal marketplaces that function much like eBay.  For example, the ShadowCrew site that was busted by the U.S. Secret Service in 2004 had an estimated 4000 members and up to 8 million credit card numbers.  Another site, carders.cc, was itself hacked twice in 2010 but is still operating.

Different kinds of data have different value: A credit card number may be worth as little as a few cents; that same number with your name, address, and Social Security number could be worth $30.  The extra data can be sued to perpetrate identity theft, which can be much more lucrative than simple credit card fraud.

Credit Cards

A carder who buys financial data on the underground marker can convert it to cash through a money mule.  Mules are usually recruited through work-at-home job offers that claim to be hiring "payment transfer agents"; often, they don't know they are committing crimes.  Credit cards are used to purchase goods or gift cards, which are then shipped to the crime boss.

Other mules know exactly what they are doing.  For example, they might use stolen credit cards to purchase large numbers of gift cards, and then use those gift cards or sell them online.  Stolen card numbers are usually tested ahead of time with small ($1 or less) donations to charities-that's something to keep an eye on.

Bank Account Fraud

As the monitoring of credit card fraud improves, criminals are turning more toward bank accounts that lack the same kind of automated protection systems.  Access to online bank accounts is now one of the most valuable items in the criminal underground.

In bank account fraud, the bad guys log in to your account and transfer funds directly to a mule (smuggler); the mule then uses a money transfer service to immediately transfer the funds again.  (Doing it quickly reduces the changes the transaction will be reversed.)  Small businesses, whose bank accounts often lack the protections of consumer accounts, are currently hot targets; such a company can be decimated if it can't recover the funds.

In one of the most brazen online crimes in history, criminals hacked into the servers of RBS WorldPay, gaining access to debit card accounts.  The attackers raised the limits on 44 of those accounts to as high as $500,000, and then issued functional cards to accomplices around the world.  More than $9.5 million was stolen in 12 hours by using over 2000 ATMs.

CHURCH MINISTRY REVIEW
Church News

CHURCH MINISTRY REPORTS

Here are reports from the churches that we as an Association provide supplemental assistance:

The Crossing

The congregation focused its efforts preparing for Easter Sunday. Approximately twenty-five people participated in a flier distribution; over seven hundred fliers were distributed. We also distributed 19 bibles.

Our congregation experienced an all-time worship attendance high of 156. Our church is now cooperating with FGSD on the backpack project. The Crossing is sponsoring twenty-five backpacks that will be filled with food and sent home with children each week. The church is formulating a plan to launch a community food bank. The Crossing Mission Team has begun planning an overseas mission trip to Athens Greece slated for this summer. Our Team will be assisting with church planting in the region and serving in the Oasis Refugee Center.

We continue to pray for two church members who are fighting cancer. Please join us in praying for Sam Ruiz and Lucy Inscore. Also pray for God's provision and direction regarding the overseas mission trip.

Trinity

Trinity Church celebrated our 2nd Easter together last weekend and it was such a thrill.  We had over 140 people worship with us and the cool thing about it is it was all our people and their guests.  Just think 2 years ago there was no Trinity Church and now we regularly have over 80 on an average Sunday with us and are reaching more and more people in the community.  Sunday attendance certainly isn't everything but it is a very strong barometer of the momentum of the church.  Please pray with us that we will bust through that barrier of 100 people in regular attendance soon

Many thanks go out to FBC Pittsburg, TX as a new partner with us and Trinity Church.  We have had a long standing relationship with FBC Pittsburg for years through family and friends which has now emerged into a strong base of support.  This church from East Texas has been such an encouragement to our family already and we look forward to what God is going to do through them both in Portland with us and in East Texas.

The Community

Met with our leaders - Met with coffee shop owners - invited new people to come - had a fellowship night - had 2 worship gatherings.  Average attendance is up to 25.

Please be in prayer as they continue to build relationships with the owner of the coffee shop they are meeting at, as this has been a great place for them to meet together.

Iglesia Vida Nueva

They had four professions of faith.

We continue the sermon series WAFFLES - SPAGHETTI.  We have various activities with the youth of Life Zone.  To continue with the meeting of leaders (every Thursday 7:00pm.)

Please be in prayer as Pastor Johnny seeks to control his calendar of activities, schedules of studies, and work, and giving priority to them more necessary.

KITS FOR KIDSkits for kids

There are millions of children around the world who are unable to attend school because their families cannot afford the basic supplies required.  Others live in areas recently struck by disasters which render the supplies unavailable.   Providing these simple school items will not only meet the physical needs required for education, but will also give missionaries and national partners an opportunity to share the love of Christ with these children and their families as the supplies are distributed.

Your Baptist Association can be a part of this exciting project!  We need your help in promoting this opportunity with your churches. For more information visit the website www.vbskitsforkids.com or contact Baptist Global Response at this address:

Mission Dignity

They call it Dignity. We call it a Mission.

GuideStone's Adopt An Annuitant ministry now has a new name - Mission:Dignity™

Since 1918, GuideStone Financial Resources has been on a "Mission" to provide "Dignity" to retired pastors or their widows. To more accurately communicate the essence of our ministry, we have changed the name of the Adopt An Annuitant ministry to Mission:Dignity.

These are men and women who have faithfully served God's people and now find themselves struggling to meet even basic needs. Many served small, rural churches that paid only modest salaries and couldn't afford to contribute to their pastors' retirement. Often, these pastors had to work extra jobs just to make ends meet.

Mission:Dignity currently helps over 2,000 people with extra money needed for housing, food and vital medications. It has also ensured a well-deserved dignity, independence and, often, the ability to continue serving.

Did You Know...?

The Mission:Dignity ministry spends approximately $6.5 million annually to help retired ministers or their widows.

Assistance from the Mission:Dignity ministry means recipients don't have to choose between food and medicine.

Approximately 60% of Mission:Dignity recipients are pastors' widows.

Your church and pastor will be receiving a letter with more information.
