NJO

Making old things new - we are headed in a new direction!

The Nelle Johnson Offering was established to provide funds to enhance our serving  and giving locally and to the world as an Association.

This year's offering will be used as follows:

Leadership Development -

Healthy, growing pastors are essential for developing healthy, growing churches. We would like to develop  SALT (Strengthen Associational Leadership Team)  to support and resource our pastors.

This team focuses on supporting pastors with practical needs during hard times as well as  creating opportunities for training, mentoring, coaching, partner-ships, assessments, consulta-tions, and whatever other means we can access to resource these men of God so they can continue to grow in their ability to lead, equip, preach, and impact their community for God; keeping in mind every pastorate is unique.

IBA Continuing Education Fund - Provides scholarship funds that benefit Northwest Pastors, Pastor's Family and Ministry Leaders to attend seminary, complete under-graduate studies, and etc.

Brochures will be available for distribution to the churches in March.

Offering Goal for 2011:
$7,000.00

This offering can be collected and turned in year round.  We will also have the Associational Week with Nelle Johnson Offering as the emphasis is:

May 15-22, 2011

Missionary Moments:

GUY MUSE leads strategy plan-ning for his team in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In November 2009, 15 church planters received instruc-tion in how to encourage and support a church planting move-ment. They went out and practiced what they learned, and one month later, 14 new outreach groups had been started, and more than 100 souls had been added to the Kingdom. Two of these newly forming churches have already gone to second-generation church plants. God's Kingdom is growing in Ecuador because you pray and because you faithfully support missions through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Add Guy, the church planters, and the new believers in Ecuador to your prayer list this week.

It is estimated that there are over two million deaf people living in North America, and over 80,000 of those live in Kentucky. But reaching deaf people goes beyond simply enlisting someone to interpret worship services in sign language. As church plant-ing missionary to the deaf for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, TIM BENDER helps churches find unique ways to reach these individuals. He also directs and teaches seminary extension classes for deaf leaders. Our commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission through the Coop- erative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering has helped Tim train over 20 deaf leaders, which resulted in seven new deaf ministries and churches. Take a moment and thank God for these new ministries and churches, and ask His Spirit to speak clearly to their hearts so they can experience His love and forgiveness.!

Baptist Global Response Update: Toyko Disaster

As of March 18th, 2011

TOKYO --- The Southern Baptist relief effort in Japan is moving forward, in spite of uncertainties about the ongoing nuclear crisis in the northeastern part of the country, the executive director of Baptist Global Response announced March 18.

A "second wave" team is following the two-member assessment team that arrived March 12, said Jeff Palmer. Two disaster relief specialists are joining the additional two assessment experts, giving the new, four-member team an opportunity to launch the initial Southern Baptist disaster response.

"This initial response team includes members of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Network from South Carolina and Alabama," Palmer said. "They are heading into Tokyo to set up a command center for a unified Southern Baptist disaster relief base."

Because government restrictions prevent a large-scale overseas volunteer effort, the initial relief projects will be conducted in partnership with Japanese Baptists and other humanitarian groups, Palmer said. The projects will focus on earthquake survivors outside the tsunami zone, where the nuclear crisis is most serious.

"Because so much of the U.S. media coverage is on the nuclear crisis in the tsunami zone, we aren't seeing how serious the situation is in other areas," Palmer said. "The area devastated by the earthquake is much larger and the conditions in those areas are very serious. We can do a lot to help people in desperate need because of the earthquake while we wait for the nuclear situation to be resolved."

The area around Sendai in northeastern Japan has been gravely threatened by a nuclear crisis since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. Four of the plant's six reactor units have experienced fires, explosions or partial meltdowns. Emergency responders have been dumping tons of water on the reactors in hopes of preventing a disaster.

Based on the disaster assessment conducted this past week, the initial relief effort will focus on life-essential items: basic food items, water, blankets, hygiene supplies and kitchen utensils, said Pat Melancon, BGR's disaster management specialist.

"Based on past experience and what we're seeing on the ground in Japan, things like this will be the greatest help to people who are just trying to survive while the country's recovery effort gets underway," Melancon said. "These are the things our on-the-ground partners in Japan are asking for."

The first round of relief supplies also will include radiation detectors, Melancon added. "We are taking the possibility of radiation exposure very seriously," he said. "We're going to be real careful with that part."

BGR hopes the new team will be able to set up supply channels within a week so Southern Baptist relief supplies can begin moving into the country, said Ben Wolf, who with his wife, Pam, directs BGR work in the Asia Rim.

"We know how anxious our Southern Baptist disaster relief specialists and other volunteers are to come to Japan and help," Wolf said. "They know people are in desperate need, and they are willing to take whatever risks are necessary to take the love of Jesus to hurting people.

"The reality, however, is that right now we can't go ourselves, so we will focus on praying and giving so our partners in Japan can get the job done," Wolf added. "Because of the scale of this disaster, recovery will be a long-term challenge, and we believe there will be plenty of opportunities to go in months to come. For now, donations to Japan relief, especially to the general fund, are the critical need."

The senior pastor of Tokyo Baptist Church said he has been amazed at the outpouring of concern from around the world.

"I have been overwhelmed with e-mails from people and churches from all over the world who want to help, people we know and people we don't know, said Dennis Folds. "These are difficult times but it is a time like this that we can make an impact for the greater good, for the Kingdom."

Kits for Kids Project

This summer Lifeway Christian Stores will partner with Baptist Global Response to feature the missions' project in their Vacation Bible School materials.  The project is called "Kits for Kids" and will involve U.S. churches and VBS groups in collecting/packing basic school supplies in 2.5 gallon re-sealable bags.   These educational kits will be mailed by churches to a warehouse in Virginia, and from there shipped out to various parts of the world for distribution to kids in need of these basic school items.

There are millions of children around the world who are unable to attend school because their families cannot afford the basic supplies required.  Others live in areas recently struck by disasters which render the supplies unavailable.   Providing these simple school items will not only meet the physical needs required for education, but will also give missionaries and national partners an opportunity to share the love of Christ with these children and their families as the supplies are distributed.

Your Baptist Association can be a part of this exciting project!  We need your help in promoting this opportunity with your churches. For more information visit the website www.vbskitsforkids.com or contact Baptist Global Response at this address:
