Although it seems like we just started summer vacation, we need to start getting the outdoor environments ready for the students!
There are a lot of little things that need to be done: weeding, mulching, clearing the trails, and building a vegetable garden for the toddlers just to name a few!
Parent Workdays were created out of necessity when the school was first founded. But over the years they have continued as a way for parents to get together, maintain the outdoor environments and help lower expenses for the school.
So mark your calendar for next Saturday, July 21st. Join us for the morning or even just an hour! The more hands, the more we can accomplish!
If you are unable to join us for the workday, please consider lending some garden tools (please label) or donating water.
Contact Marie Bowman for more information. (910) 581-0458

Happy Summer to our MCS community! I hope everyone is staying cool in this hot weather. As much as we love the summer, August and the start of school will be here before you know it.
Welcome to our new students and families! We are so excited that you have chosen to be part of our great school. We encourage you to ask questions and become involved in the different activities available throughout the school.
To all of our returning students and their families, we are eagerly awaiting the start of school and looking forward to seeing your beautiful, smiling faces in August. All of the MCS staff and Board members are busy getting ready for the new school year.
Sharon, Shane and I have been staying very busy during our summer office hours. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and say hello. I would enjoy meeting you!
Please do not hesitate to call the office or send an email with any questions as we go through the summer months.
Have a restful and peaceful summer.

Help Your Child Make a Smooth Transition
Now is the time to start the discussion with your children, especially if this is your child's first school experience. Doing little things like mentioning, "that is the turn to go to school" when you drive down Gum Branch Road. Drive down Bates Street and see the school. Or even stop by the office and say hi!
It all starts with a "you can do it" attitude! And with a little consistency and positivity this transition will be made easier.
But it is important to remember, that as much as we all love our children and want to make this transition smooth for them, it's ok and perfectly normal for some children (depending on their personality) to react differently. Some children will just walk in and start exploring the classroom environment. Others may cry, try to leave the room, just stand there, cling to you, or even hide behind you. The Directors and Directresses are trained to console and encourage the children to choose a lesson. They are prepared to help build a bond with your child. And they are also prepared to help the child build a bond with the classroom environment and classmates.
So remember, no matter what you do to prepare for school and no matter what reaction your child has just remember to be encouraging. Be positive. Be consistent. And SMILE A LOT!!! Alice Hampton Directress, Stepping Stones East |
Benefits of Montessori
Montessori education offers our children opportunities to develop their potential as they step out into the world as engaged, competent, responsible, and respectful citizens with an understanding and appreciation that learning is for life.
- Each child is valued as a unique individual. Montessori education recognizes that children learn in different ways, and accommodates all learning styles. Students are also free to learn at their own pace, each advancing through the curriculum as he is ready, guided by the teacher and an individualized learning plan.
- Beginning at an early age, Montessori students develop order, coordination, concentration, and independence. Classroom design, materials, and daily routines support the individual's emerging "self-regulation" (ability to educate one's self, and to think about what one is learning), toddlers through adolescents.
- Students are part of a close, caring community. The multi-age classroom-typically spanning 3 years-re-creates a family structure. Older students enjoy stature as mentors and role models; younger children feel supported and gain confidence about the challenges ahead. Teachers model respect, loving kindness, and a belief in peaceful conflict resolution.
