A Letter from the Head of School

Dear Montessori Parents,
In every Montessori classroom we see the early lessons of grace and courtesy develop positive interpersonal skills that will serve children throughout their lives. Visitors to the school always comment on the peaceful environment where children move through the classrooms with a positive awareness of the other students.

Demonstrations of Practical Life exercises include Grace and Courtesy and  are designed to nurture a child's natural qualities of grace and courtesy and his inherent desire to contribute to the peaceful order of his environment. The lessons include but are not limited to:  greeting someone; introducing oneself; shaking hands; receiving visitors; apologizing/excusing oneself; watching and observing others; waiting; blowing ones nose/sneezing; using a quiet voice; rolling a rug; being silent; being kind; making friends and many, many more. The desire to be gracious and courteous is naturally present in the child. The child also absorbs manners and behaviors from their observation of the world they live in.
As we complete another successful year at MCS we have many opportunities for celebration. The Lower Elementary students are having a Soiree. This special party gives the students a chance to meet their classmates in a social environment outside the classroom and practice manners of grace and courtesy that apply to this environment.
To be graceful is to be pleasing, agreeable, and to demonstrate goodwill. The classroom and the home are both ripe for teachable moments in grace and courtesy that will help a child in situations throughout his life. By arranging a special party, the Soiree, where each child is the honored guest, gives us an opportunity to practice these lessons of grace and courtesy in a prepared environment.
To be successful in any situation the child must have clear ground rules. Though the rules may differ from culture to culture or situation to situation, they clearly spell out the need to treat others as we would like to be treated. In other words, they encourage children to be respectful of all creatures and all things. As with any skill, practice makes perfect.
We look forward to these last days of the school year and are excited about the celebrations that we will share with you and your children.

Thank you,
Peggy Higgins
