The Environmental Education program is up and running! Mr. Bob Patterson and myself are in full force teaching your children wonderful lessons and doing fun activities that are both engaging and exciting. I have heard nothing but positive feedback coming from both parents and children about the E.E. program. As of late, we have received a grant from Onslow County for two personal composters, which we are delighted to have. This step is a positive one because it helps the children and others see how important it is to give back to the earth. It begins with the young minds, which then can pass what they have learned to others. We are very excited about this program and I know everyone is excited to have this great addition. If you have a moment, stop by and come see the Chameleon Pavilion in action.

Thank you,

A Letter from the Head of School

Dear Montessori Parents,

Montessori education is based upon two powerful, unique ideas that are supported by over 100 years of academic excellence: the child as a self-motivated, active learner and the school as a scientifically prepared environment. If Dr. Montessori could see your children in their classrooms she would see her vision fulfilled.

When observing the children there are repeated examples of their curiosity and love of learning. Thank you for cultivating this life-long love of learning.

It is exciting to see the work being done to prepare for the "Night Down in Motown" to be held on March 6th. For the last two years this has been very successful and has greatly improved our financial outlook.  So mark your calendar and invite your friends. I can guarantee that you will have a great time!

Sensorial Materials

Developing the Mathematical Mind

Montessori gave the Sensorial equipment the credit for helping the child explore the environment and also for developing the mathematical mind-the mathematical structures necessary for order, sequencing and precision of mathematics.

During the day-to-day manipulation of concrete objects the child builds her concepts of number and the ability to concentrate. Montessori emphasized that all materials must be beautiful and stimulating to the senses, inviting children to take them from the shelves to explore them again and again. Small children naturally love repeating activities and thoroughly absorb the intended concepts.

Next week we will begin to look at the formal mathematics curriculum.

See you at Parent and Child Night on January 29th.
