Parent-Teacher Conferences

This coming week will begin the very important process of parent teacher conferences.  These individual conferences provide the opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss all phases of the child's development, social and emotional as well as intellectual.  These meetings are not merely reporting sessions but conferences to exchange information necessary to facilitate proper guidance of the child.

Parents can share information about their home life and their attitudes toward their child and the school.  then the teachers will have a better understanding of how the child thinks and feels, and intern become a better teacher for the child.  Teachers will have the opportunity to answer questions about the school and to explain the specific skills and understandings the child has acquired.  Possible reasons for sucess or difficulty can be discussed.

The information that is obtained by listening, observing, and questioning through these conferences should be used to help parents and teachers work together to perceive and correct problems and to chart a positive course for each child.  The more information that is available, the more complete the picture.
Sincerely,

A Letter from the Head of School
Dear Parents,
The students are settling in to a level of comfort with the routine and expectations.  As they arrive at school you can see their smiles that say, "I know I am going to enjoy my day".

I see students who are so absorbed in work that they become insensible to external stimuli.  When children choose their own work and then chooses to complete the task, they finish with a renewed energy as if they have just had a nice rest.  You read the expression on their face that can only be translated as "JOY".

Starting at the Primary level, the Golden Beads are used to introduce children to the decimal system.  One of the purposes of the Golden Beads at the Primary level is to teach place value as well as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  At the Elementary level the students again reconnect with the Golden Beads material to build the four geometric elements of point, line, surface, and solid.  This allows them to see how each is created from the proceeding one.  Golden Beads work is just one more example of the genius behind the concrete material, that Dr. Montessori developed.

Sincerely,
Peggy Higgins

Enjoy your Conferences!

A Letter From the Editor

Dear Community,
This past week we took the Upper Elementary Class kayaking on the Intercoastal waterway.  If you don't remember last Wednesday, it was what most would call a perfect day.  It was 72 degrees with a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky.  The water was so crystal clear that you could see the oyster beds underneath your boat.  As we paddled our guide talked to us about nature, history, local geography, and kayaking.  To my suprize some of the barrier islands were used in the Civil War and were named for local families.  During our discussions a school of Dolphin swam by in what seemed to be a hello and Great blue Heron flew over head.  As I paddled my boat, I was thinking of how much a trip of this sort teaches students, not only of nature and history but of life and why conservation is so important in this World!

I would like to thank Mr. Bob Patterson and Barrier Island Kayaks for bringing us out!

Thank you,
Shane Terzaken
