A Letter from the Editor Dear Community, This week I would like to use my column to introduce myself to those of you I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet. This is my first year at MCS and I am so excited to be here. My wife and I moved back to Wilmington this summer from Boone, North Carolina were I taught and administered at Mountain Pathways Montessori School for three years.
This year, I am working with the Upper Elementary classroom as well as with the administration. The Upper Elementary class is a vibrant group of young people who are extremely excited about learning. The Directress, Sonia Lamont and I are very enthusiastic about this years curriculum inside and outside the classroom. Today we were scheduled to take our class on a kayaking trip through the intercoastal waterway but the weather didn't cooperate so it will be rescheduled. Our class is also working on a project called The Upper Bakery Company which will allow the students to learn about small business operations. The Upper Bakery Company will be having its Grand Opening Soon! Elementary Montessori is an unbelievable experience for children because unlike many traditional schools the students are able to see how the things they learn in the classroom can be applied in the global community.
I am so excited to be part of such a wonderful learning enviroment and a great community. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. I will be giving an update on the elementary classrooms periodically, our students are always doing interesting projects.
Thank you,
Shane Terzaken

A note from the Head of School
Dear Montessori Families, Thank you for the loving attention that you have given to help your child launch a successful year. Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental tenet that a child learns best within a social environment that supports each individual's development. What makes Montessori education unique is the "whole child" approach. The primary goal of our Montessori program is to help each child reach full potential in all areas of life. Activities promote the development of cognitive skills, social skills, emotional growth and physical coordination. The holistic curriculum, under the guidance of a specially prepared teacher, provides children with the opportunity to enjoy the process of learning as they create their knowledge and develop their personalities. Our curriculum extends over the first twelve years of life. Montessori programs in some communities continue through middle school and high school. Hands-on didactic materials are introduced from the beginning to the end in learning areas such as practical life, sensorial, language, math (which includes geometry and algebra), and the content areas of biology, geography, history, and science. When your child is introduced to materials they become their basis for lifelong learning. For example, in the Primary class the student will be introduced to the geometric solids not knowing that in later years they will see the solids again as they explore area and volume. Dr. Montessori understood that the early sensorial learning sets the stage for a deeper understanding of concepts. See you at International Night, Peggy Higgins
