Museum Assessment Program

1008The Museum of Mobile recently completed the final phase of the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) provided by the American Association of Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a grant-making federal agency supporting museums.  The MAP provides guidance in meeting priorities and goals and understanding how the museum compares to standards and best practices.  Museums facing challenging financial times find that by participating in the MAP they are better able to prioritize goals for prudent allocation of resources, document needs to make a stronger case to funders, and provide recommendations on ways to become an even stronger institution.  The Museum Board voted to participate in the assessment as a starting point for a comprehensive study of the entire organization.  The MAP has already helped the Museum to develop its new mission statement; "History is our mission...to illuminate and preserve," which was recently adopted by the Museum Board.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Day Camp
As one last children's event before Carver leaves, the Museum of Mobile hosted a day camp on June 21-25.   The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Day Camp was a huge success.   We had about 14 children each day.  The children learned about organic gardening and composting.  They learned about what insects are good in your garden and which ones are bad.  They did arts and crafts from recycled and materials and went on a Museum scavenger hunt.  They even got to cook with vegetables from "Our Own Destiny Communal Garden" at Fort Conde.  We will be sad to see The George Washington Carver exhibit leave, but we are glad that these children learned so much this week and hope they continue to carry on his legacy.
The Museum of Mobile, located at 111 S. Royal Street is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $3.00 for students, and free for children under 6. For more information, call the Museum at 251.208.7569 or www.museumofmobile.com.
