George Washington Carver Exhibit
| | |
Read more about the incredible achievements of a man with ideas far ahead of his time!
"Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the
woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books,
for they speak with the voice of God. Since
new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore
stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way possible."
-George Washington Carver

Spring Green Festival
|
Celebrate Alabama history and the conservation of
our planet with the Museum of Mobile downtown Saturday, April 24th from 7:30am until 1pm. The Museum is partnering with Dauphin Island
Sea Lab, Five Rivers, Keep Mobile Beautiful and Mobile BayKeeper to host Spring Green Festival.
The free festival will honor George Washington
Carver's contributions to environmental science and conservation. Local businesses and individuals who participate in ecologically friendly activities are invited to join the festival
to show easy ways to make a big difference in the community. The Museum will also offer a free hands-on activity for children.
Royal Street will be barricaded between Government
and Church Street for a block of eco-friendly fanfare. Cathedral Square Market Vendors will be
making their seasonal debut with delicious locally grown treats and home made
products, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, bread, baked goods,
honey, peanuts, and casseroles.
Keep
Mobile Beautiful will be shredding sensitive personal documents just in time
for the end of tax season. Each person
can bring two copy paper boxes of documents. The shredded paper will then be
recycled.
The Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab will provide hands-on activities demonstrating the effects of litter and marine debris on coastal watershed flow to promote true understanding
of humanity's effect on the environment and the ecosystem.
Many local organizations will provide festival-goers
with information about their services
and
contributions to the environment. Green
Solutions will be show-casing local businesses that provide eco-friendly alternatives and providing
information about what happens to goods after
they leave your recycling bin. Earth Resources, a locally owned and
operated
curbside recycling service will be giving out information on their
recycling
pick-up services. |
Satchel Author, Larry Tye Book Signing
|
Award winning author and former Boston Globe journalist
Larry Tye will visit the Museum of Mobile downtown Sunday, May 16, from 1pm until 3pmto sign and discuss
his book, Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend. The book is a
biography of baseball giant Leroy "Satchel" Paige. Tye describes
Satchel as "the most sensational pitcher ever to throw a baseball."
"During his years in the Negro Leagues he fine-tuned a pitch so scorching that
catchers tried to soften the sting by cushioning their gloves with beefsteaks.
His career stats - 2,000 wins, 250 shutouts, three victories on the same day -
are so eye-popping they seem like misprints. But bigotry kept big league teams
from signing him until he was forty-two, at which point he helped propel the
Cleveland Indians to the World Series. Over a career that spanned four decades,
Satchel pitched more baseballs, for more fans, in more ballparks, for more
teams, than any player in history," Tye says of the baseball legend.
In Satchel, Tye untangles myth from truth
about this flawed yet majestic man. Tye reveals Satchel as a
self-promoter who selflessly fought to guarantee his teammates richer
paydays. He was a Casanova with out-sized appetites - and a devoted
father who towered over baseball with his skill as well as his
shrewdness.
The book rewrites the history of the integration of
baseball, with Satchel Paige in a starring role. While many dismissed
him as a Stepin Fetchit, Satchel was something else entirely: a quiet
subversive. He pitched so spectacularly that he drew the spotlight first
to himself, then to his all-black Kansas City Monarchs, and inevitably
to the Monarchs' rookie second baseman Jackie Robinson. In the process,
Satchel, even more than Jackie, opened the door for African Americans to
the national pastime and forever changed his sport and this nation.
