Linda McMurry Edwards, Brown Bag with the Author

Carver Flowers
Dr. Linda McMurry Edwards, author of two George Washington Carver biographies, will visit the Museum of Mobile downtown Monday, April 5, for a brown bag lunch event from noon until 1 P.M. to discuss Carver's life and the myths surrounding it.

Dr. Edwards' first Carver biography, George Washington Carver: Scientist and Symbol is a "sensitive portrait" of Carver, a complex and extraordinary man over- shadowed by very simple-and often unfactual-myths. Since Dr. Edwards's retirement, she has written a second biography of Carver for children, George Washington Carver: The Life of a Great American Agriculturist (2003), and she enjoys speaking about Dr. Carver in her free time.

Dr. Edwards earned her Ph.D. from Auburn University 1976 and taught African American history at North Carolina State University for 20 years. In addition to her writings about Carver,  Dr. Edwards' publications include biographies of several notable African Americans such as Ida B. Wells and Monroe Nathan Work. Edwards also co-authored a college-level American history textbook, America and Its Peoples: A Mosaic in the Making.

Linda Kenney Miller, an Evening with the Author
Friday, April 9, 2010, 6 - 7:30 p.m.

val webb Award-winning author and granddaughter of George Washington Carver's personal physician will read excerpts from her book, Beacon on the Hill, a vivid biography of her grandfather's life. She will visit the Museum of Mobile to speak about her research and relationship to the key characters. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Ms. Miller is a graduate of Fisk University with a B.A. in English. She taught English and Reading in the District of Columbia Public School System, while taking graduate courses at Howard University, where she published Realism in Black Poetry. Miller left teaching in 1975 to work as a medical administrator for her father, Howard W. Kenney, M.D., and remained in the field for over thirty years. Miller recently left the medical field to return to her roots as a writer.

Beacon on the Hill was awarded several national book awards, including 2009 Best Book Award for African American Fiction and 2008 Best Book Award for Historical Fiction from USA News, and 2009 National Indie Excellence Award for African American Fiction.

Beacon on the Hill tells the captivating history of John A. Kenney, M.D., "pioneer Negro physician of the twentieth century" who, as the son of  former slaves, raised himself up to become the personal physician to Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver at Tuskegee Institute.

Botanical Drawing Class with Val Webb
Saturday, April 17, 2010, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Local artist Val Webb will be teaching a botanical drawing class at the webb flowerMuseum of Mobile downtown on Saturday, April 17, from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.
This one-day workshop, Botanical Drawing: The Summer Garden in Pencil, Ink and Watercolor, will instruct participants in drawing and painting heirloom flower and vegetable plants using step-by-step scientific illustration techniques.

The cost of $75 covers all fees and enough supplies to use in class and take home for continued practice. Pre-registration is required by April 10. No previous experience is necessary. Students will be guided as they develop their powers of observation, learn realistic sketching techniques and explore color mixing in a fun, relaxed and encouraging setting. We will work both indoors and out, using live garden plants and flowers as models.
