Winter 2012

New Mentor-Protege Relationship

Shook Construction and Northstar Contracting, Inc. are excited to announce our formal acceptance into the SBA-approved, 8(a) Mentor-Protégé Program. Shook and Northstar have known each other's organizations for nearly five years, including past performance on projects together. In 2010, Northstar participated in a construction training program Shook was leading in Cleveland, Ohio. The two firms began to meet more regularly and to discuss opportunities to collaborate. These discussions led us to the 8(a) program, which will allow our firms the opportunity to joint venture on strategic federal and private projects in order to grow both of our organizations. Targeted work will include federal, municipal and private clients, specifically in the healthcare, industrial and water resource markets.

Northstar is a six-year-old general contracting company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Specializing in site work, underground utilities, concrete and general building construction, Northstar's past and current clients include NASA, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and the Department of Veteran Affairs. Through this relationship, Shook will provide Northstar with counsel and training as Northstar grows the scale of their organization. Likewise, Northstar will provide Shook with a viable operations partner who can also support the economic inclusion strategy that is a part of every project that we build.

This relationship will provide tremendous growth opportunities for both organizations and we are excited for what the future holds!

Shook's Commitment to
Safety is Recognized

ICA and AGC AwardsShook received two safety awards in late 2011, of which we are very proud.  Both awards confirm the culture of safety led by company management and permeates each of our activities in the field. We emphasize that no task is too small to be performed safely!

Indiana Construction Association (ICA)
Shook's continuing company-wide emphasis on jobsite safety was recently recognized when the ICA presented Shook with the association's annual Gold Summit Safety Award. Shook received the award in the category of "Highway, Heavy & Utility Prime Contractor with less than 100,000 man hours."

This award is significant in the construction industry since it recognizes how well jobsite workers understand and apply the company's safety program based on confidential surveys given to jobsite personnel. Our employees must indicate Shook's safety program is best-in-class in order for the ICA to honor our efforts.

Associated General Contractors (AGC)
The Ohio chapter of AGC recognized Shook's continuous focus on safety with its Construction Safety and Excellence Award (CSEA) for the Heavy Division with 300,001-700,000 man hours. As a recipient of this award, the AGC of Ohio submitted Shook Construction as its nominee for consideration to receive the AGC National Safety Award in this category.

CSEA recognizes those construction companies that do well carrying out their safety programs. CSEA has evaluated each participant's commitment to safety, occupational health management, and risk control. Shook strives to eliminate hazardous conditions that may cause harm to anyone working on our construction sites, in our offices, or in any other facility under our care and custody. It is an honor that the judges recognize Shook's continuous effort to keep employees safe.

With the committed support of management, Shook's safety program is led by Joe Reich, Director of Safety and Risk Management, and Safety Coordinator, Mike Behnken. These safety experts make hundreds of jobsite visits each year performing safety audits and conducting safety classes on jobsites and in centralized classrooms. Their leadership is collaborative, contagious and permeates our project teams.

We have created the environment where our employees can come to work knowing their ability to go home in the same condition is a way of life and not just a wish.

Shook lives the culture that "Safely is the only way to work!"

Shook's Chairman Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Vince AGC Pinnacle AwardVince Corrado, Shook's Chairman of the Board of Directors, recently received the Pinnacle Award for Lifetime Achievement presented by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio.

The Pinnacle Award honors those that have demonstrated leadership to AGC of Ohio above and beyond the call of duty. The award recognizes an individual's continued dedication, long after his or her direct leadership obligation has been fulfilled.

Vince is only the second person to receive the award since it was created in 2006.

Vince is a skilled leader with a wide range of construction industry experience. After graduating from the University of Dayton, he began his career at Shook Construction as an estimator. He moved through the ranks as an engineer, project manager, vice president, president and then CEO. Today, he serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

For over 25 years, Vince has been active in AGC. He has volunteered and held many leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels.

In addition to his years of service to AGC, Vince has been involved in countless community activities throughout his career. He also serves as a volunteer Angel Pilot for the National Pilot Network shuttling very ill patients to world class healthcare providers all over the country. An avid general aviator with a passion for flying, Vince was selected in 2002 to represent the State of Ohio in a national event known as "Flight Across America." Ultimately he presented the state flag to the City of New York to honor the memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001.
