Ohio, Are You Ready for the Construction Reform?
If you haven't heard already, public construction in Ohio is undergoing some drastic changes. Based on certain parameters, each public agency now will have more project delivery methods available, including CM-at-risk and design-build. The drive behind this initiative was to increase the speed and efficiency of public sector construction projects.
Shook is ready!
For years, Shook has been providing services under the CM-at-risk and design-build umbrella, in addition to the traditional CM agency and general contracting methods. You can trust we understand the intricacies of each project delivery method and will apply our knowledge and lessons learned to your projects.
Beyond this know-how, the reform also will promote higher accountability and transparency throughout the construction process. Open and honest communication between the owner and construction team, as well as the designer, will drive better quality projects and higher client satisfaction.
Shook is ready!
Shook already has been practicing these concepts for years, with our clients' trust being a priority from the onset. By being held accountable for our actions and offering complete transparency throughout the construction process, our clients have received not only higher quality projects on time and on budget, but also peace of mind that we acted as their agent with their best interests at heart.
Our expertise in meeting our clients' expectations using these delivery methods is well known in the industry. We are proud that our reputation has allowed members of our company, including company president, Bill Whistler (center in picture to right), have been asked to participate in industry panels discussing the coming changes in delivery methods. |

Award-Winning Project
The new Center for Tissue Innovation and Research earns an Award of Merit from Engineering News-Record!
Located in Kettering, Ohio, the new 94,000 SF facility handles bone, skin and tissue grafts which are all processed, packaged and distributed to locations around the globe, making it the fifth-largest tissue bank and the largest not-for-profit skin provider in the United States. Already making a global impact, the new facility is anticipated to increase 2010's recorded 165,000 distributed tissue grafts by 40%. These grafts not only save lives, but also extend the quality of life for thousands of people.
The Shook project team met the challenge of complying with five distinct construction protocols needed to build 13,000 SF of clean room space, which is divided into 16 separate rooms, as well as the complex mechanical systems that support the space. The protocols were met and exceeded by maintaining precise coordination among trades while the rest of the building was constructed around the clean rooms.

Here a School, There a School
This summer was a busy one for our K-12 construction folks as they pushed through schedules and added finishing touches to four schools:
Dayton Public Schools Dayton students celebrated the opening of two new schools:
River's Edge Montessori opened their doors to students on Wednesday, August 17 with the official dedication ceremony a few days later. Unique to Montessori schools, students are placed in classes based on their learning ability and knowledge vs. their ages and grades. In addition, students often participate in group activities while sitting on the floor. To better accommodate, a large circulation area was incorporated into the design, which includes 10 stained glass windows from the former Franklin Montessori school (to be demolished) hung perpendicular to the curved wall (see photo on the above). On track to receive its LEED Gold certification, this facility overlooks downtown Dayton and the Great Miami River.
Sharing a site with the City of Dayton's aquatic park, the new Fairview PreK-8 still holds a lot of history. The 74,200 SF facility incorporates nostalgic pieces from the old school, including two historic stained glass windows. Originally created in 1945, the window pictured to the right depicts all four branches of the Armed Forces in tribute to the 51 Fairview grads who lost their lives in World War II. This school is also on track for its LEED Gold certification.
Brookville Elementary School
Brookville elementary students received a red-carpet welcome (literally) to their new PK-3 facility in August. The new 51,000 SF facility replaces the aging Westbrook Elementary School. Proudly displayed in one of the hallways is the ceramic wall tile mural (pictured right) the District created (out of mostly student artwork) for a fund-raiser. This facility is registered to receive its LEED Silver certification.
Greene County Career Center
To provide a better space to accomplish its teaching goals, the Adult Education Criminal Justice program got a new home as the Center renovated the former HVAC and machining labs. The 10,000 SF space now includes a new exterior entrance, three classrooms, three offices, a lounge, a weight room, locker rooms, and a 4500 SF lab. Special accommodations were made for driving a police car inside and simulating an evening arrest, as well as providing areas for situation demonstrations involving struggles or mace/pepper spray. The project included demolition and renovation in only 10 weeks, which we completed two weeks ahead of schedule! This allowed ample time for the faculty to get moved in and situated 2.5 weeks before class started.

Message from our CEO

-Frank J. Klein
Each October for Energy Awareness Month, the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Environmental Management Program kicks off a new campaign to promote energy-saving practices. This year's campaign is Turn Words into Actions; Turn Actions into Results.
Shook Construction considers it a priority to actively practice energy-saving methods on each of our projects, as demonstrated in part by the projects highlighted to the left.
Many of our project managers and engineers hold LEED accreditations and our project teams always look for ways to maximize sustainability without negatively impacting construction.
For example, on our recently completed Miami Valley Hospital Southeast Addition project, our team used Project Specific PrefabricationTM (PSP) to build various components of the new facility. This approach resulted in the use of only one dumpster for the PSP throughout the entire 20-month construction project.
LEED certification has only been in existence for 11 years and the number of "green" projects throughout 40 countries is astounding: over 8,000 projects have been LEED certified with another 23,000 being LEED registered.
Shook Construction is proud to be a part of this environmental movement and will continue to work with our clients to make this world a better place. |
