Shook's Safety Record Soars

Shook's continued focus to provide a safe and healthful work environment for our employees, our subcontractors and our clients has brought great results and individual recognition recently. The following impressive results were announced at Shook's 2011 annual meeting:

  • In 2010, there were over 545,000 man hours reported without a single lost day from work due to work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Workers' compensation claims costs have been reduced significantly, by nearly 88% in the past 5 years.
  • Shook Construction has consistently kept our Experience Modifier Rate (EMR) below 1.0.
    • The EMR of 1.0 or less is a standard which owners and clients require of construction and vendor companies during the prequalification process.
  • Shook Inc.'s total recordable cases have declined for the third consecutive year.
ACI Safety AwardIn February, Shook's very own Larry "Moe" Mileski, a project superintendent, was presented the Allied Construction Industries (ACI) Safe Employee Award for 2010 during the 12th Annual ACI/OSHA Construction Safety Day. For over five years, Larry has served as project superintendent at the Ford Sharonville facility. His construction crew has removed/replaced over 1.2 million SF of concrete, erected tens of thousands of square foot of protective barriers, erected several building additions, and removed/replaced numerous pipelines. Under his supervision of more than 131,000 man-hours, there has been no lost time incident reported. His success has stemmed from emphasizing accountability to all of his crew members. He frequently rewards them for completing their work in a safe and productive manner.

In light of Volunteer Month, we did a little research...

Did you know that according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 62.8 million Americans over the age of 16 participated in volunteer activities in 2010? Time and time again, Americans have shown their strength and compassion with volunteer efforts.

At Shook Construction, it is no different.

We enjoy helping others, whether that involves assisting our friends and neighbors in need, coaching our kids' sports teams, or donating funds and resources to charitable organizations.

As we observe Volunteer Month, I encourage you to look for ways to reach out to your fellow man in 2011.

Poll Results!

Last quarter, we asked your opinion of what the construction market looks like for 2011.

  • 60% = Increased construction volume
  • 40% = Construction volume to stay the same

New Poll: Community Involvement

Click on the link above to indicate if you or your company is involved in volunteer and community outreach efforts.
