Organic World

Organic Can Feed the World

Barry Estabrook

"Given that current production systems leave nearly one billion people undernourished, the onus should be on the agribusiness industry to prove its model, not the other way around."

This is a heartening article, from the December issue of the Atlantic magazine. Researchers refute the lie that only petrochemical-fueled ag can feed our overpopulated planet. See the full article at the Atlantic online magazine.

Skin Deep InforCosmeticsmation

Local blogger and author Kate Ferry recently blogged about a great resource for cosmetics information. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), publishes a comprehensive database of more than 65,000 personal care products, providing a non-biased review of the facts behind the ingredients in each product.

Kate noted, "When you look up a product, you are given a quick reference with a green, red, or yellow light and a rating with a number between 1 and 10. You can also get a detailed description of where these two rankings came from. The data is research-based and simply explains what the risks are and why the ingredients are or are not a concern."

Following her commitment to using healthy products, Kate said, "I appreciate that they provide the facts and let you make the decision. The Skin Deep website is definitely worth checking out." For more information, see the EWG websiteSee Kate's Sacred Bee blog

The Center for Food Safety's (CFS) True Food Shoppers' Guide is now available for iPhone and Android operating systems on your mobile phone. You can download their free application to your phone and always have a Shoppers' Guide on hand.

The app also has shopping tips, a "what's new" section to keep you up to date on their most recent activities, an "action" section to take urgent actions on the go, and it even allows you to call or email companies who are still using GE ingredients right from the app.

CFL bulb brokenRecycle Your CFL Bulbs and Batteries at the Co-op

The Co-op has joined a recycle program that allows you to drop off your compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs and household batteries at the Cordata Co-op. The bulbs go to Puget Sound Energy and the batteries go to Battery Solutions, a company that recycles batteries and reclaims the materials they contain. For more information, see www.batteryrecycling.com.
