Community Shopping Day Update

Thanks to everyone who shopped on Saturday, November 19. Because of you we donated $2,007.30 to Local Food Works!
.

Take Our Online Member Survey

We're one of eight U.S. food co-ops selected to participate in a member survey and we'd like you to participate so we can learn more about your Co-op experience. The first 50 members from our Co-op can either choose to receive a $10 Community Food Co-op gift card or make a $10 donation to the Farm Fund. The survey is administered by the University of Kentucky and personal information submitted will remain confidential. Take the survey.

Support Our Local Economy

If you could make your checkout process easier and quicker, stay on top of your food budget better, AND save the Co-op some money in the process--wouldn't you be interested?

Turns out lots of Co-op shoppers and employees have joined the "use my gift card" club. Learn more about how to make this a regular part of your shopping experience by reading an article on the benefits of using a Co-op gift card versus a bank debit card for your regular everyday or weekly purchases. See the full article on page 9 in the December issue of our print newsletter.

Gluten-free Products GF green

We recently heard from a Co-op member named Bill, who wrote, "Great newsletter, but nothing was said about your supply of 'gluten' products that us celiac people are always looking for." He proposed having a big sign near our gluten-free (GF) products.

Hey Bill, thanks for your interest and your ideas. Instead of a single GF section, our GF products are integrated in every department throughout the store. We have placed shelf tags identifying every GF item so watch for those.

Another great tool for celiacs and others with gluten sensitivity, is our Co-op Gluten-free Product & Information Guide. It's available on our website and at the service desk in either store.

Michael Polan on the Farm Bill

Every five years, we have the chance to influence the way our food is produced, our land is conserved, and our health is protected. The legislation that addresses these issues is known as the Farm Bill, and in 2012, it's up for renewal. "It isn't really a bill just for farmers," says food journalist Michael Pollan, in this video from Nourish Short Films. "It really should be called the food bill because it is the rules for the food system we all eat by." To view the video and get more information, see the Nourish Life website.

Building A Future with Farmers

The National Young Farmers' Coalition recently released a study showing that the nation's young and beginning farmers face tremendous barriers in starting a farming career. Building a Future with Farmers: Challenges Faced by Young, American Farmers and a National Strategy to Help Them Succeed surveyed 1,000 farmers across the U.S. and found that access to capital, access to land, and health insurance present the largest obstacles for beginners. Farmers rated farm apprenticeships, local partnerships, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) as the most valuable programs to help beginners. See the full report;  to get more information, see the Young Farmers Coalition website.

Can We Feed the World & Sustain the Planet?

Jonathan A. Foley

A five-step global plan could double food production by 2050 while greatly reducing environmental damage.

The world must solve three food problems simultaneously: end hunger, double food production by 2050, and do both while drastically reducing agriculture's damage to the environment. Five solutions, pursued together, can achieve these goals: stop agriculture from consuming more tropical land, boost the productivity of farms that have the lowest yields, raise the efficiency of water and fertilizer use worldwide, reduce per capita meat consumption, and reduce waste in food production and distribution. A system for certifying foods based on how well each one delivers nutrition and food security and limits environmental and social costs would help the public choose products that push agriculture in a more sustainable direction. For the full story, see the Scientific American website.

Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?

Mark Bittman

The "fact" that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, "when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli ..." or "it's more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald's than to cook a healthy meal for them at home." This is just plain wrong. For the full article, see the New York Times online.
