Planning for the 2012 Farm Bill
With two recent developments--the debt ceiling agreement and WA Sen. Patty Murray's appointment to the Debt super committee (giving WA more influence on the Farm Bill and agr/food budget decisions)- the Farm Bill may be decided upon by Thanksgiving. That means there is much to do NOW.
The NW Farm Bill Action Group has been meeting for months developing a plan for input on the Farm Bill. They definitely need your input, energy, and resourcefulness to make a great action plan and get the word out. People and organizations are planning activities and they would love to share this. For more information, email the NW Farm Bill AcNW Farm Bill Action Group or see their website.

Food Justice
by Robert Gottlieb
When we talk about today's food system, food injustices are ubiquitous. It's where workers in the fields, the meat processing plants, or the restaurant industry face hazardous and exploitative conditions. It's in the low-income neighborhoods that lack supermarkets but abound in fast food franchises. And it's with our food products that sometimes resemble more of a high calorie chemical mash than a wholesome and healthy product. Opposing these unjust conditions, a food justice movement has taken root, seeking to transform the food system, from field to table.
Robert Gottlieb, co-author of the new book, Food Justice, talks about the strengths and challenges facing these new and dynamic food justice groups and their organizing efforts, the emerging new politics around food, and the efforts to transform the very language and understanding about food, from how food is grown to why eating has become a political act. Read more about the book.

Nature vs. Nutritionism's False Hope
Ina Denburg
How many times have you heard this question, "With all the scientific information we now know about nutrition, how come Americans are heavier and unhealthier now than ever before?" The answer is the same as it ever was: because we overeat, we eat a ton of crap food, and don't sufficiently exercise. We know it and we've known it for a long time.
To make sweeping change, we need to establish a healthy relationship with real food. So let's start with Michael Pollans' wise seven word prescription - "Eat food, mostly plants, not too much." In order to follow this, we have to know what food is.
Real food is that which comes from the earth and is whole, unprocessed (other than by heat), natural, and complete. A hallmark of real food is characterized by its lack of denaturing by the time it reaches your plate. For the full story, see Denburg's article at Good Food World.

Farmer to Farmer: The devastating impact of GM crops
In this must-see video, a farmer investigates the harsh reality of growing GM crops in the U.S. 10 years after their introduction. A story emerges of: - Roundup-resistant weeds that have to be hand-weeded
- lost markets because of GM contamination
- removal of farmers' rights to save even non-GM seed
- huge price hikes of non-GM seed to match GM seed prices
- complete removal of choice in seeds and chemicals once a region's farmers have gone down the GM route.
See the Farmer to Farmer video. For more information, see the Institute for Responsible Technology. |
Organic,Inc.: Natural Foods and How They Grew
Everybody's going organic! But where did this craze for organic food come from and how did it manage to win a seat at the nation's table? What is organic food? Is it really better for you? And why are so many of us buying it? In Organic, Inc., business writer Samuel Fromartz looks at organic food's anti-industrial origins, its unlikely innovators, and its classic conundrum of free-market triumph in which a booming industry ultimately risks betraying its founding ideals. A primer on the business and culture of food, Organic Inc., tells the fascinating tale of the newest trend in American Consumption. Source: the Good Food World. |
