An e-publication with your good health in mind
| January 2011

Hey, Where's my Co-op Newsletter?
Have you missed your newsletter? Maybe you didn't realize that we still publish our regular paper newsletter, but you have to pick up your copy at the store (you'll find them at the service desk and in various locations around the stores). For your convenience, you can also read or print the newsletter from our website. We stopped mailing it to households more than a year ago to help reduce our costs during financial difficulties. We continue to review this decision and other options, but for now...put the newsletter on your shopping list and remember to pick it up! Our regular paper newsletter offers feature articles and regular columns such as Community Shopping Day groups, volunteer opportunities, Wine Notes, Board summary, Farm Fund updates, full list of Healthy Connections classes, community events, and member ads for local businesses.
This e-news contains different content than our regular paper newsletter. This publication is electronic only and contains short current news items with links to more detail, action updates, Co-op events, meetings, and happenings in our stores.

 Co-op Shoppers Gift Others
Marc Westenberger, a cashier at the Cordata Co-op, relayed an interesting story. A few days before Christmas, a woman came through Marc's checkout line and purchased a $30 gift card. Then she handed it to Marc and asked him to give it to someone in need. And so he passed it on to a regular shopper who has faced severe difficulties this year. But there's more to this story...
The next day while Marc was sharing this story with a co-worker, another customer overheard him and wanted to do the same--they purchased another gift card to be given to someone else in need. Marc was amazed at the wonderful kindness these shoppers showed saying, "I love that Co-op people are so generous and thoughtful." This is truly giving in action. |

Next Round in GE Alfalfa Case
In late December, the USDA released its environmental impact statement (EIS) of Monsanto's genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready alfalfa. The EIS was produced by the USDA in response to a court decision demanding more thorough analysis of the potential environmental, economic, and health impacts of GE alfalfa before approving deregulation.
Although the EIS outlines three options for GE Alfalfa: continued regulation, full deregulation or conditional deregulation, the USDA has made it clear they will deregulate this crop by the end of January 2011. The USDA has asked the organic industry to work on a program that would allow coexistence of GE alfalfa with organics. Stay tuned for more updates on this important issue. |

Reverse Vitamin & Mineral Deficiencies by Fortifying Crops
"Hunger and under-nutrition is such an enormous global challenge that it demands innovative technical, operational, and institutional solutions." --Dr. Bruce Cogill, chief of nutrition at USAID.
That is one reason that in 2011, HarvestPlus, an alliance of more than 200 agriculture and nutrition scientists and development program implementers, is on tap to receive $1.3 million from USAID to biofortify seven staple crops that represent the source of food for the vast majority of people on the planet.
For more information, see the USAID website or another article on this issue at the Science & Development Network website. |
 Child Nutrition Act Passed
Food activists, parents, and consumers were happy to hear that Congress recently passed the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. Ellen Gray, Executive Director of the Washington Sustainable Food & Farming Network (WSFFN) reports, "This is the first major improvement in school meal programs in more than three decades. We made real strides in getting local farm fresh food to school children."
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) also noted that calls to legislators on this bill helped win $4.5 billion over ten years to raise the nutritional standards of food in schools, $40 million in mandatory funding for the new Farm to School Program to bring more farm fresh foods to school lunch trays: healthier options, children consuming more fruits and vegetables, and lifetime improvements in academic achievement and diet.
For more details, see WSFFN website and the NSAC website.
