Job Opening: Chief Financial Officer

The Chief Financial Officer is the principal financial operating officer of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. The CFO reports directly to the Bishop of the Diocese and has duties in and responsibilities for the following areas and functions.
Financial Office The current structure of the Finance Office includes the CFO, a full-time Controller, and a full-time financial assistant. The CFO leads this team in the performance of all financial responsibilities.
Leadership As a member of the Leadership Team of the Diocesan staff, the CFO is responsible for performing any and all roles requested of the Team; provides advice and counsel to Bishop and Leadership Team regarding strategy and financial matters of the diocese and of congregations, when required; performs all tasks with the heart of a Servant Leader.
Financial Records The Finance Office is responsible for the creation, maintenance and reporting of Diocesan financial records, including but not limited to:
- Operating accounts
- Investment accounts
- Payroll and benefits for diocesan employees and retired persons of the diocese
- Congregational loan and grant funds
Budget Working with the Diocesan Budget and Finance Committee, the Finance Office is responsible for the preparation, presentation, maintenance and implementation of the Diocesan budget:
- Prepares an annual budget
- Presents budget to Council and Convention for approval
- Oversees monthly revenue and expenses in relation to the Budget
- Reports monthly to Council and the Diocese, as required
Financial Reporting Responsible for the preparation, presentation, maintenance and communication of Diocesan financial reports:
- Prepares monthly and annual financial reports for Council and Trustees
- Monitors performance against budget
- Provides reporting essential to staff and committees' oversight of appropriate budget areas
- Prepares annual diocesan report to The Episcopal Church, as required by canon
Audit Oversees and monitors annual audit of diocesan accounts:
- Coordinates annual audit of Diocesan financial accounts by external auditor
- Provides staff support to the Diocesan Audit Committee
- Receives and reviews annual parochial report and audit prepared by each congregation
Investments and Endowments Coordinates investment process and reporting:
- Provides staff support to the Diocesan Investment Trustees who oversee investment performance
- Provides support to congregations investing with the Diocesan Investment Trust
- Acts as liaison between congregations and TIAA-CREF (the current investment management and record-keeping firm) for all questions and issues related to investment reporting and procedures
- Provides proper recording and use of gifts and legacies as per donor requirements
Stewardship Supervises the Diocesan Stewardship Officer; provides staff support to stewardship office and diocesan committees:
- Communicates with congregations concerning voluntary pledges to the diocese
- Assists in the development of standards for giving to the diocese
- Provides reports on congregational giving to the diocese
- Implements monthly invoicing and collection of congregational pledge payments
Diocesan-wide Relationships Works closely with diocesan committees and other staff areas in leadership and administration of the diocese:
- Provides counsel and direction to congregational leadership regarding financial matters
- Provides staff support and works closely with
- Audit Committee of the Diocese
- Trustees of the Diocesan Investment Trust
- Budget and Finance Committee of Diocesan Council and Convention
- Diocesan Council
- Trustees of the Episcopal Diocese and Properties
Qualifications- Education: Master's degree or equivalent educational background in finance/business or related field
- Experience: Minimum 10 years experience in a responsible or similar financial position. Evidence of leadership ability and strategic planning background. Common sense experience in non-profit financial management
- Other: Strong communication skills, both written and oral presentation; ability to work cooperatively with persons of all educational levels and backgrounds, including volunteers; strong organizational and problem-solving skills, ability to assimilate and evaluate large amounts of information and communicate it and its implications clearly
- Knowledge of the Episcopal Church required; knowledge of the Diocese of Newark a plus
- Availability for evening and Saturday meetings required
- Commitment to working with a community of faith
