Diocesan Convention Coverage
|
|
Initial coverage of the 136th Annual Convention held January 29-30 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark. Watch the diocesan website and future issues of the Digest for additional coverage in the coming weeks.
Bishop Beckwith's Convention Address "Go deeper, Jesus tells Peter in 5th chapter of Luke's Gospel. Peter doesn't want to go deeper. He thought he had already gone deep enough the previous night on the water and hadn't brought back a thing. Not a minnow, not a mussel -- nothing. He figured he would hear some razzing from his colleagues and some complaining from his wife - but from Jesus? He is a carpenter now moonlighting as a rabbi; who may understand life, hope and freedom in a new and inspiring way - but doesn't know squat about fish." Read more.
ERD President tells convention agency is in Haiti "for the long haul" Building on its longstanding relationships with the Diocese of Haiti and supported by prayers and donations from across the Episcopal Church, the church's relief and development agency is helping Haiti's people in the aftermath of the massive Jan. 12 earthquake and is committed to assisting it in rebuilding in the years to come, Episcopal Relief & Development President Robert Radtke told Diocesan Convention on Jan. 30. Read more.
Committee Resolutions Adopted at Convention Diocesan Convention on Jan. 30 quickly passed four resolutions addressing issues of human trafficking, clergy pay equity, the terms and responsibilities of the diocesan trustees, and prayers for use on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Read more.

Engaging the World: Reported Haiti Donations Approach $100K
|
|
Bishop Beckwith announced at convention that Haiti relief donations totaling $55,000 had been reported by congregations and individuals. Since then, new and updated reports have brought the total to $87,745.57. With the $10,000.00 donated by the Diocese, the total reported amount given to Haiti relief by the Diocese as a whole is now $97,745.57.
Note: Some churches are not keeping a tally but instead asking parishioners to donate directly to Episcopal Relief & Development. Therefore, the actual amount donated from our diocese is probably higher.
Bishop Beckwith recommends donating to Episcopal Relief & Development's Haiti Fund. ERD has supported the Diocese of Haiti for many years through a central Development Office and a network of 28 development agents.
Has your congregation taken a collection designated for Haiti?
Are you planning a fundraising event? Please send information to Nina Nicholson, Director of Communications.

From the Voice Editor: Moving On Soon after Diocesan Convention, I will be leaving my position as editor of The Voice. It has been a privilege to edit our diocesan newspaper over the past three years, and a wonderful opportunity to learn about the many creative and welcoming ministries in our diverse congregations. I wish to thank everyone who contributed articles, photographs, letters, ideas, translations, advertisements and commentaries to help our newspaper build community and give voice to the many voices of our diocese.
Sharon SheridanFrom the Communications Director: Going Forward In light of Sharon's transition and the need to exercise
careful stewardship of the diocese's resources, print publications are
being put on hold for the time being. The lively features, news and commentary that had been published in The Voice will continue to be published on the diocesan website, www.dioceseofnewark.org, and promoted through the Digest - available weeks earlier than possible with a print publication. Discernment
around the diocese's communications needs, which began last fall, will
continue - including discussions on how to meet the needs of those who
rely on print communications. Whatever the outcome, the Communications
Office is committed to continuing to tell the unique story of the
Diocese of Newark, to its members and to the world. Your story ideas and photos are welcome and can be sent to me at nnicholson@dioceseofnewark.org. Nina NicholsonDirector of Communications & Technology
