Want Bigger Brains?

Want Bigger Brains? Walk

True, there's no home-gym equipment designed to build up your brain muscle. But a simple walk will do. A new study shows that regular cardiovascular exercise can enlarge the hippocampus -- a brain structure vital to memory function.

Fit Body, Better Memory
As we age, our brains tend to shrink, and our memory can wither in the process. But a new study shows that an aerobically fit person has a larger hippocampus and performs better on spatial memory tests than a less fit subject. In the study, being more fit did not slow the rate of hippocampas shrinkage once it began, but it meant that people generally had more to work with once shrinking started. And that means less total deterioration overall. Related research suggests that exercise may even help restore lost brain volume and cognitive function in people with early-stage Alzheimer's disease, possibly because exercise increases cerebral blood flow and boosts the birth of new brain cells. Here are some other cognitive-health tips to consider:

Stamp out stress. Chronic stress can be a real brain drain, and troubled finances may be one major cause.
Ditch depressing thoughts. Minimize the Mai Tais. Some studies suggest that alcohol abuse may shrink the hippocampus. But can moderate drinking actually help cognition?
Up your endorphins
Easy Way to Up Your Exercise Endorphins.

You know that nice mood you get from your daily walk? Here's an easy way to ratchet up those feel-good feelings a notch or two: Invite a friend.

New research suggests that exercising with a fitness-minded buddy is not only more fun but also boosts the level of happy chemicals your body produces because of the exercise.

Stamina in Numbers
Research has shown for years that exercise helps boost people's moods because it boosts endorphin levels. Now, a study of university crew team members showed that 45-minute workouts done in groups helped increase the rowers' pain thresholds (and thus endorphin levels) better than when they exercised alone. Discover Your Team Spirit.

Exercise only works if it feels doable and you enjoy it. So find something that piques your interest, then invite a like-minded friend to join you.
Are you walking enough?

Do you know your "Walkscore?"  Check out www.walkscore.com and see if you live in a walkable location.

Why walk?  Its the most efficient exercise known to man, made by man for man.  Are you walking enough?

Twenty minutes of brisk walking per day is the least you should or could be doing.  Feel more ambitious, then add one minute of slow running in between each five minutes of walking.  Mall walking is great fun not just because of the exercise but the social connectivity enjoyed by your running or walking  with your neighbors.

If you feel more ambitious, start stretching and begin the water bottle exercise routine.  What is the water bottle routine you're asking?  Its simple. each quart of milk has a handle.  With each empty milk container, fill it half way up with water and begin lifting it up in modified curls.  Three sets of ten repetitions is a good first step.

Protein Linked to Alzheimer's both Good and Bad

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- New data about amyloid precursor protein, (APP), a protein implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggests it also may have a positive role -- directly affecting learning and memory during brain development.

So is APP good or bad? Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center say both, and that a balance of APP is critical. AD, the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, is characterized by neuronal cell death and a progressive loss of brain function.

Abeta, one of many proteins associated with the disease and a known neurotoxin, is released when APP is cut by several enzymes. When Abeta is released, it can form plaque, a contributing factor in AD. In this way, Abeta and APP are involved in the early process of AD development.

APP is also known to be present at the synapses between neurons, though its molecular action is not understood. Synapse loss is thought to be one of the main contributors in the cognitive decline seen in AD. Georgetown University Medical Center researchers say that while APP is negatively associated with AD, it appears to play a positive role in brain development.
In this new research, the GUMC scientists found decreased density of dendritic spines, the protrusions that allow communication between brain neurons, in mice that have been genetically modified not to produce APP.

The scientists then studied four-week-old mice that over-produced APP and found a significant increase in spine density. At one year old, however, these mice had Abeta plaques, as well as decreased spine density due to the neurotoxic effect of Abeta.

"Our work suggests that APP balance is critical for normal neuronal development, connection of synapses, and dendritic spine development, all of which have implications for the extensive synapse loss and cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer's disease," study author Hyang-Sook Hoe, PhD, of the GUMC department of neuroscience, was quoted as saying. "One strategy to counteract development of Alzheimer's disease is to maintain balance in APP protein expression in order to prevent production of Abeta."
