Senior Achievement Nominations

November 11, 2009 at the Boca Raton Country Club

Senior Achievement has a record number of nominations for the 10th annual Senior Achievement awards Luncheon set for November 11, 2009.

Senior Achievement, one of American Health's signature programs since 1999, and now celebrating it's tenth anniversary with more nominations than ever before for it's Senior Achievement Awards Luncheon with more than 140 nominations.
Also known as the "TEDDY BEAR LUNCHEON" for the number of Senior Achievers that participate in American Health's "TEDDY BEAR CAMPAIGN", the independent panel of judges will have "one heck of a time" said, founder and director of Senior Achievement J. R. Gordon.

"With these many nominations of so many outstanding nominees, it will be harder than ever to find just the five in the categories the jury must make award determination" said Gordon.

Senior Achievement places men and women 50 and over in voluntary positions throughout their geographic homeland, or within 5 miles of their homes after filling out a two page questionnaire on where best to place applicants for senior achievement

"Individual Senior Achievers can find great voluntary positions within 5 miles of their home and never knew such organizations even existed" said Gordon.  Some Senior Achievers play the part of "mother Goose" reading to children under 5 years of age while others love to teach basic computer skills to those eighty years old or older as they reach out to grand-children, or simply reading short stories to nursing home residents or reading mail to the blind. It's all part of Senior Achievement.

The luncheon is set for Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Boca Raton Country Club across from Costco on Congress.  Thickets are $40.00 and reservations ca be made anytime prior to November 10th at 561-361-9091.

MASTERCARD, VISA, DISCOVER AND AMERICAN EXPRESS CARDS ACCEPTED THROUGH THE OFFICES OF AMERICAN HEALTH.

Turning Off Cancer Cells?

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A team of Syracuse University researchers discovered a molecular switch they believe could prevent the production of cells found in several types of cancer, including leukemia.  They discovered the switch within the Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) protein complex.

Biologist Michael Cosgrove, assistant professor in SU's College of Arts and Sciences, led the research team. Anamika Patel, a post-doctoral researcher in Cosgrove's lab assisted. In the course of their research to better understand MLL, a protein switch that helps regulate the formation of white blood cells, Cosgrove's research group discovered a new molecular switch within the MLL complex, which they labeled W-RAD.

"We thought that MLL was the only switching mechanism present in this protein complex," Cosgrove was quoted as saying. "However, we discovered the complex is really two switches."
In normal cells, MLL combines with four proteins that comprise the W-RAD group to create a molecular switch that controls DNA events required to form white blood cells. When the MLL switch is broken, white blood cells do not mature properly, resulting in a dangerous proliferation of abnormal cells.

Similarly, the proteins that form the W-RAD complex are overproduced in several types of cancer cells, but until now, scientists did not know the function of these proteins. Cosgrove's group discovered that the W-RAD proteins form a new kind of switch. "The W-RAD switching mechanism signals the cell to create multiple copies of cancer cells," Cosgrove said. "If we can find a way to turn off this switch, we might be able to slow or stop the production of abnormal cells and convert them to normal cells."
