Earth Day - April 22nd
Each year, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The Earth Day idea came to founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after having witnessed a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. In conjunction with Republican Congressman, Pete McCloskey the two men launched the first Earth Day resulting in 20 million Americans taking to the streets to demonstrate for a sustainable environment. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
