Greetings!

It's always exciting to see the first signs of ripening in the vineyard.  "Veraison" is the onset of the ripening process, when hard, green grapes begin to soften and turn color.  Grapes will complete veraison in about two weeks and will then continue to ripen and develop their sugar over the next several weeks.  Sunny, rain-free weather provide ideal conditions for wine grapes in their final phase of ripening- here in VT, one can only hope.  Nets are at the ready - the birds are as excited for ripe grapes as we are!

2010 Marquette!

We're excited to announce the release of our 2010 Marquette!

 2010 Marquette bottle

This elegant, single varietal red is 100% Vermont grown.  Complex notes of ripe, black cherry and soft tannins lead to a long finish.  Aged for 7 months in French oak barrels, some of the time spent "sur lie".

Sur Lie is a French term referring to aging wine on it's "lees".  Lees are the deposits or sediment formed after fermentation.  Rather than racking fermented wine off it's lees, we leave it to age on the sediment to enhance flavor and body.  "Sur lie" aging imparts a creaminess, nuttiness and complexity to wines.

We believe this is our best Marquette vintage to date - stop by for a taste !

Winemaker Notes:

Marquette grapes

Marquette Grapes on 8/1

Despite the cool, wet start to the growing season, the relatively dry and warm mid-summer days have rapidly progressed grape development. We are beginning to see verasion on our MN hybrids, even earlier than last year. In the vineyard we've been busy for the past month or so finishing up shoot positioning/combing and performing leaf pulling. Leaf pulling promotes sunlight penetration, heat accumulation, and quick drying of the clusters, all important in ripening a crop. Laterals and a few basal leaves are plucked from the fruiting zone and the result is a nice, open view of all the clusters. Take a walk through the Marquette at Rt 7 (McCabe's Brook) and have a look.

Winery work has been focused on finishing our 2010 vintage bottling. At this point, most of our barrels and tanks are empty. With crush 2011 quickly approaching, the excitement (and stress) of bringing in another successful vintage is growing. We'll spend the next month cleaning all of our harvest/crush equipment, making sure it all works properly, and keeping a close eye on our ripening grapes.
