winter pruning  winter vines  high snows at Breeding Barn

Winemakers Notes:

The slow pace of winter is soon coming to an end, and the rush of spring will certainly be here soon. Our high-cordon trained vines have all been pruned and once the remaining snow disappears, we will begin pruning our VSP (Vertical Shoot Positioning) trained vines. Until recently, some of them were buried up to three feet in drifts! So sure, there's been some twiddling of fingers, but it's not hard to find things to do on a farm winery. Once vines are pruned, the canes or cordons need to be fixed to the fruiting wire of the trellising system. This helps support the weight of the season's growth and prevents the wind from blowing the vines over once the canopy fills in. We use a combination of rubber band like ties and special tape to keep our vines secure. It's important to use a material that will stretch or break as the cane or cordon increases in size, as to not girdle it.

In the winery, our wines are still resting peacefully in their stainless steel or wooden homes. Tasting, of course, is done regularly. 2010 has produced some wonderful wines. Bottling will be underway soon.
