Young Marquette Shoots

There is fruit on those vines!
Despite snow in May, our grapes are thriving and sporting
lots of tiny grape clusters, which in a few short months will
be picked and pressed. We've managed to
"weather the weather" and now we're concentrating
on "weathering the weeds", a constant battle that
any gardener can commiserate with.  In June, we'll be
planting a new vineyard site on Rte. 7 in Charlotte
  - more on that next month.

Taste of Vermont 2010
Shelburne Vineyard was proud to participate once again in the
Taste of Vermont on May 6 in Washington DC.  The annual event, hosted by Senator Patrick Leahy and held in the elegant Kennedy Caucus Room, showcases some of Vermont's finest culinary products.  It's a great opportunity for the folks on Capitol Hill to have a true taste of Vermont.

New Releases

Look for our new wine releases this month:

Coach Barn Red
Vinted in oak barrels, this medium-bodied Merlot
is crafted from grapes we source from the North Fork
of Long Island. It fills the mouth with notes of cherry
and chocolate and finishes with soft tannins.

Pinot Gris
A close cousin to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris thrives best in cooler climates.  With light, sweet notes of honeydew melon. This fruity, aromatic wine has a bright acidity followed by a soft and gentle mineral finish.  It is one of our most versatile wines
for food pairing.  A great summertime white.

Cote de Champlain
A blend of Cayuga with a touch of Chardonnay and Riesling.
Softer and slightly less acidic than Cayuga, this white has
hints of tropical fruit on the nose and finish.

Winemaker's Notes:

As of this week, we have bottled several of our 2009 vintage wines including Cote de Champlain, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Lakeview White and Whimsey Meadow Rosé.  We are extremely busy in the vineyard these days, using the Weedbadger to control all the weeds and grass that continue to grow up between the rows of vines.  On two of our sites, we must also mow the 8' aisles between the rows where the grass grows all too fast.  We are lucky to have escaped the frost of the past few mornings, with only a few tender shoots on a few vines having been affected.

In the next couple of weeks we'll be planting an additional half acre of Vidal Blanc (one of our Ice Wine grapes) at Meach Cove as well as a half acre of Marquette vines on the open meadow just north of the Rt. 7 winery.
