Starting out, I apologize. I'll bet you didn't know that I've been on vacation. Well not exactly on
 | Happy Labor Day |
vacation but it's been a welcome break. Starting mid May and especially through the month of July I've been very busy helping my daughter start up a fabrication business in Lafayette, Louisiana. I know this is probably a poor excuse for not writing to you and covering what has been happening at the Proton Center, but I hope you'll understand and consider this my vacation for 2011. While I've been successful in this PC disaster recovery effort, I've not been successful in convincing any Pals to be part time editors.
This was the situation. No sooner had my daughter and her husband purchased a sheet metal fabrication business, when they experienced a hard drive failure of his most valuable tool acquisition in the whole shop. It is an automated pattern cutter driven by an 11 year old program running on a Windows 95 PC. Very expensive to replace. He had experienced a hard drive crash on his PC with no back up.
Where do you find a PC that runs Windows 95 and where do you find a copy of a Windows 95 license? Well one of our Pals, Dave, helped with a newer monitor and an earlier Pentium that runs Windows 95.
When I travel back to Louisiana this Friday I'll install a newer Pentium 4 system with back up and recovery and remote support from Houston. The software has been updated to run on Windows XP Pro.
Oh, and I didn't mention the lightning strike at our house on Wednesday just as I was beginning to write the newsletter. We lost several electronic devices including the main desktop computer that I use to do ProtonPals work and including the large monitor which is a ProtonPal asset. I got the fixed "main frame" back last Thursday with a refurbished motherboard and was able to bring up the two 80 Gigabyte hard drives.
Well so much for how "stuff" happens and what I do for my mental exercises.
At MDACC Proton Therapy center, July and August are vacation months for the social workers and for the monthly prostate cancer patients meetings. Thing will start up quickly in September and I've noted there are 3 conferences, one by our own Proton Center.
In Gratitude,
