Greetings!
" You all know that some things were worth dying for. One's country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you know the people of your countries were behind you." President Reagan's speech at Pointe de Hoc, Normandy on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1984. You can listen to the talk President Reagan's D Day Anniversary Speech
As I looked for inspirational material for this Memorial Day newsletter, I found the sobering scene above and I was reminded what General Colin Powers said a few years back.
 | Enough Land to Bury our Heroes |
"We have sent men and women throughout the world to put down oppression. And did we ask for any land? No. The only land we asked for was enough land to bury our dead."
Considering the sacrifices these boys and our families have made, you might want to remind your grandchildren and their friends that in spite of what they hear in modern America, this exceptional culture and it's allies fought back and defeated fascism, communism and dictatorships. Along with that we learned to feed six billion people and provide outstanding medical care to a worlds population.
Hope you're doing well and have a happy and safe Memorial Day. In Gratitude,
Joe Landry |
Lupron Legionnaire Dave Was Victorious | One of the best talks in four years
At the regular monthly prostate cancer patients meeting hosted by the Social Workers, Lindsey and Alicia, Dave Stevens presented a great paper based on months of research as well as personal experience. | Legionnaire Dave |
The large Proton Center meeting room filled for his talk and the topic and speaker was so interesting that no one left during the entire ninety minute session. To get an idea what the attendee thought here's my friend's note to Dave about the session.
" Dave-I want to thank-you for your thorough presentation on a subject that has been little discussed since I graduated from the Proton Center 6/07. Even though I am coming up on my 4 year follow-up , I still had questions on many aspects of the Lupron therapy in conjunction with Proton therapy that you cleared up in your talk. It will help me especially when I explain this remarkable treatment to others. Honestly, I think you could take the presentation on the road. Good luck in the rest of your journey! Personal Regards -Luke M."
I met Dave in January of 2011 and soon after he completed his treatment I started working with him, mostly to clue him in on what resources the ProtonPals could off. He completed a one pager on hormone therapy that we called an interview and published it last month. He continued to research and learn about the field of hormone therapy as he read and digested around 50 medical articles and reports of findings all the while consulting with Dr. Lee.The presentation today was based on 20 articles. He's also discovered and made use of the great resources at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center - the two Learning Centers in the Mays Clinic and the Research Library. The interview we published last month is on the ProtonPals web site and you can access here Dealing with Lupron or download a 3 page PDF paper here Q and A Interview with Dave. I'd encourage you to sign up to the forum/bulletin board site and participate in the discussion. Ask questions, get answers. Most of the site is organized based on topics Dave and I thought would be applicable to hormone therapy after effects, including some HUMOR. At some risk, I put the purported humor in site, Dave had nothing to do with it. Look in and see the short poem by Willie Nelson, Texas's Poet Laureate. bbpress the bulletin board and forum |
Proton Center's Five Year Anniversary
| Dr. James Cox Reflects on Last 5 Years
"We have made a lot of progress in past five years and have developed a patient population and group of treatments that are more diverse than any another proton center in the world. We're treating patients not only with cancer of the prostate, who are now in the minority, but also a large proportion of patients with thoracic tumors, a lot children including children under the age of one. So we've made a lot of progress in diversity of the diseases that we're treating and in maximizing the availability of proton therapy to all the diseases that might benefit from accurate high dosage radiation"

History is the Account of Human Progress | Marty Seligman is no Apologist
 | Positive |
Flourish, is a book by Dr. Martin Seligman that I've just finished reading. Marty as he's called is the founder of the positive psychology movement with a hugely successful program at University of Pennsylvania. He's also a best selling author and his approach is being adopted world wide especially in Australia. In a recent book review, the writer said of Marty; "His contribution to the health and happiness of the world should not be underestimated and whose ability to balance science with story telling, research with practical applications is up there with the best of them." What I found was surprising, for an Ivy League schooled psychologist, was his emphasis on values, character, morals and his strong support of this western exceptional culture in many pages. I realize that I'm painting with a very broad brush and presenting what could be a politically incorrect view for some. Sorry, it's more than an opinion. Here are some of these paragraphs about our heritage as a people. "History in the hands of the postmodernist is a taught as "one damn thing after another." I believe the postmodernists are misguided and misguiding. I believe the history is the account of human progress and that you have to be blinded by ideology not to see the reality of this progress. Balky, with fits and starts, the moral and economic envelope of recorded history is, nevertheless, upwards. As a child of the Great Depression and the Holocaust, I am clear eyed about the terrible obstacles that remain. I am clear eyed about the fragility of prosperity, and that of the billions of human beings who do not yet enjoy the flowers of human progress. But it cannot be denied that even in the twentieth century, the bloodiest of all of our centuries we defeated fascism, and communism, we learned how to feed six billion people, and we created universal education and medical care for many. We raised real purchasing power more than fivefold, we extended the life span. We began to curb pollution and made huge inroads into racial, sexual, and ethnic injustice. The age of the tyrant is coming to an end, and the age of democracy has taken firm root.
These economic military and moral victories are our proud heritage of the twentieth century. What gift will the twenty first century pass to our posterity?"

After Effects | Bowel Changes
In the past 3 months we've been contacted by Pals who have experienced bleeding. The fact that it is temporary and self limiting is no consolation to men who have experienced this after effect of radiation therapy. It's reported in the medical literature that from 5% to 8% of the men who are treated with radiation may experience and a smaller percentage will not respond to conservative management. We're all so unique and some men tolerate radiation better than others. The men who recently contacted Ban and me were having what I believe is called late onset bleeding and occuring 12 -18 months after treatment. We've written it about before and we're now working to update the "One Pager" which is in the library and titled Radiation Proctitis. We'll include the 3 new reports of experiences and treatments, and if you'd like to have that information before the paper is complete, please call or write me.
Dr. Andrew Lee has continually recommended conservative management by changes in diet in addition to over- the-counter and prescribed medications. Also he recommends "the tincture of time" - with patience and time it will get better and heal itself.
At times it becomes essential to use surgical procedures. The most common and effective one that I've heard from you is APC (argon plasma coagulation). It is an advanced cauterization technique that seems to be effective after one treatment. Before making any decision it's highly recommended that you consult with your oncologist at the proton center and that you have your gastroenterologist talk with her also. Remember even if you have to travel outside of your region, at your expense, you should do it find the most skilled practitioner. This is not an every day procedure for many GEs although it's becoming adopted by more clinics. PubMed Abstract
Hyperbaric treatments where the level of oxygen in your blood stream is increased by treating you in a pressure chamber have also been used in one case in our Pals membership. Hyperbaric Therapy typically will involve up to 30 or more daily sessions of breathing almost pure oxygen in a pressure chamber while being monitored very carefully. Medscape Article
We'd appreciate your help in updating this information so important to the group. So write to me and Ban Capron about your experiences to be included in the revised "one pager". If you'd like to report but remain anonymous and yet still be available for contact, let me know and we can handle this discretely and clear it with you.
