Jeff IMW 2010An Incredible Ironman Journey
 by Jeff P.

Lao-tzu has been often quoted saying, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

So began my journey into the world of Ironman distance racing one fateful day as I stepped out of the hot Hawaiian sun into a little Kona t-shirt shop on Ali'i Drive. It was a typical tourist trap hawking every conceivable trinket from Brazilian imported ukuleles to Chinese made leis. Over the low hung rafters draped an assortment of t-shirts paying homage to one's favorite brand of beer, sea mammals and women in ill-fitting bikinis. Now, this little t-shirt shop would not have been but a blip in my memory except my eye caught a mural on a far wall lit by an overhead spotlight. It was an image I had seen before and was the reason I was walking along this stretch of town away from the cruise ship. This shop on this street on this island is a part of annual event known as the Ford Ironman World Championship and the mural so glorious enshrouded by light was the Ironman logo - the famed "M-Dot" logo. Below the M-Dot were t-shirts, shot glasses, license plate covers and other assorted Ironman souvenirs. Surveying the wares, I sought and found the item I was looking for in an Ironman t-shirt from the last championship race held six months earlier. I had always been fascinated by triathlon racing and the lifestyle. Until recently, I had thought it was a world unreachable and inhabited only by mythical gods of fitness.

It wasn't long ago I that was fifty pounds heavier and so out of shape from an extremely stressful job and a liking for overly large meals and highly caffeinated products. However, over the previous year (2006), I had joined a health club in a quest to alter my own lifestyle. Slowly but surely, I started to shed the layers of old habits that insulated the person screaming and clawing to come out.

Summer Camp 2010Summer Camp 2010
 Madison, WI

The 2010 edition of the EXPERIENCETriathlon summer camp was held in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin - home of brats, beer, and Ironman Wisconsin!  In the midst of a brutally hot triathlon season, this year's summer getaway training camp was a welcome respite from the daily high temps and humidity, as well as a great change of scenery.

Friday afternoon the team met up on the lakefront terrace outside of the University of Wisconsin Student Union for a short, relaxing run along Lake Mendota.  As twilight descended, we ran along the lakeshore path past the Allen Centennial Gardens, the UW marching band's practice field, and out towards Picnic Point.  Madison sits on an isthmus between two lakes, of which Lake Mendota is one.  This gives the town quite a few scenic areas to enjoy, and made for great scenery throughout our weekend.  We finished the run back at the terrace, and enjoyed dinner with a view of sailboats and students.  All too soon, we were headed off to bed - we had a big day coming up!

Is milk a good post-workout beverage?

Yes!  Low-fat or fat-free milk has carbohydrate and protein in a good ratio for maximum recovery after a workout.  In addition, it has multiple forms of carbohydrate, which increases absorption, and sodium and potassium, key electrolytes lost in sweat.  It also provides a variety of other nutrients crucial for health, including vitamins A and D, most of the B vitamins, and calcium.  Chocolate milk is also a great choice.  Milk is not an appropriate beverage for people who are lactose intolerant.

Great Job, Coach Joe!

Thanks Jim for taking the time to share your feedback.

"Coach Joe, over the last 48 hours I've had a chance to reflect on everything I've accomplished athletically over the last twelve months both before my relationship with you and EXPERIENCETriathlon as well as after. While my successes before have been substantial I believe the successes I have achieved with our relationship over the last three months surpass those before. These successes have been made possible by your training program, your guidance, and your friendship. Your willingness to share your experience and knowledge about the sport, whether it be running, biking, or swimming, have made me a much better athlete and a more confident person. You've taught me what being resilient really means in both racing and life and how to make sure I've set the proper expectations in both areas. Your training program prepared me to race at my best each time I went out there, and on top of it, and I hate to say it, the race seemed easy because I was so well prepared. I would have never imagined I could finish 11th in my division at the Naperville Tri and 4th at Chicago, the largest tri in the world (unbelievable still). While I realize I have to do the work, these successes are in no small part due to the ET Team and your training program. I look forward to our continued relationship and the support I get from you, it's absolutely fantastic. I'm glad I'm part of the ET family. I'm so glad I found you when I did. Thanks, Coach Joe!" - Jim R.
