What is "Inside the SkinTM"?

You may have heard us use the term "Inside the Skin" before, but what does it really mean?

We usually use this term when speaking about demand response or our Fifth Fuel Management DR offering. Servidyne has a unique approach of getting "Inside the Skin" of the building to find the items that work best for a demand response event (DRE). We find ways to take full advantage of the capabilities of existing building infrastructure and systems to create a customized DR solution.

Fifth Fuel Management Building Owner/OperatorWe've been able to change the mind set by asking our customers "What can you do without for just a few hours?". Once we take this approach new things start to surface that were probably never considered before. Keep in mind that demand response is not advocating permanent changes, but just temporary changes in facility operation. Fifth Fuel Management has been especially designed to meet the needs of operators of complex buildings - hospitals, hotels, and office buildings - who have traditionally avoided participation in demand response programs.

Servidyne works with the customer to design and implement a DR solution that optimizes savings and cash flow while maintaining the need for simplicity and control.

Servidyne, Hyatt Hotels & CPS Energy Spotlight

Hotels Shed the LoadServidyne was highlighted along with partners Hyatt Hotels and CPS Energy in Commercial Building Products magazine for their demand response efforts. CPS Energy and Servidyne began working together in August 2009 to pilot Fifth Fuel Management (Servidyne's DR offering) capabilities, and enlisted two Hyatt San Antonio hotel properties. At the conclusion of the pilot, efforts resulted in an average 236 kW of demand response across eight demand response events -- with minimal activity at each facility. Check out the article and learn if DR may be right for you. Click Here to link the the Commercial Building Products article.

Morrison Hall at UNC Chapel Hill Wins EPA's National Building Competition by Working off the Waste!

UNC Chapel Hill NBC Award WinnerThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR program announced that Morrison Residence Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won the first-ever EPA National Building Competition. The competition challenged teams from 14 buildings across the country to measure their building's energy use with help from the ENERGY STAR program and work off the waste. After a hard-fought competition,

Morrison Residence Hall reduced its energy use by 35.7 percent in just one year, saved more than $250,000 on their energy bills, and reduced more than 730 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

A Sears store in Glen Burnie, Maryland, came in second place with a 31.7 percent energy reduction, and a JCPenney store in Orange, California, claimed third place with energy savings of 28.4 percent.

Energy Audits for a More Efficient Tomorrow

Energy Audits serve as an essential starting point for increasing building performance and increased energy efficiency. Energy Audits also provide an updated roadmap of asset infrastructure and energy usage and cost. Basically, energy audits let you know where you are today, and what you can do to realize a better tomorrow.

Energy audits identify ways to:

  • lower costs
  • improve efficiency
  • improve maintenance and operations
  • improve the bottom line

After an audit is performed, you will now understand how much energy is used to operate a facility and where and how it's being put to use. Now it's possible to determine how much you can save, and where you can save it.

Servidyne can perform the energy audit or help you incorporate the knowledge gained from an energy audit. A hallmark of Servidyne's energy audits is the focus on no cost / low cost operational and control system improvements, in addition to identifying capital retrofit projects.
