Improve Your Lighting "MPG"
Welcome to Servidyne's monthly newsletter. As you will see, our theme this month is Efficient Lighting. I was asked to provide comments on Energy Efficient Lighting that would be both meaningful and beneficial for you in managing your building operations. So, what I say to you is that I believe most everyone today knows that Energy Efficient Lighting applications and techniques are readily available to reduce the cost of your current lighting scheme whether it is an interior or exterior building environment or a specialty area lighting situation. However, we all know that everyone just doesn't get around to implementing it. I suggest that part of the problem is that we don't typically get a lighting bill every month in our P&L's; but we get a utility or energy bill and it is just too easy for us to let that economic opportunity slip on by.

State Energy Efficiency (SEE) Action Network |
|
On February 2, 2010 the EPA and the DOE announced the creation of the State Energy Efficiency (SEE) Action Network. According to the announcement, the network was developed to help states achieve maximum cost effective energy efficiency improvements in offices, buildings, and industry by 2020. The SEE Action Executive Group is set to hold its first meeting in early March.
"In the clean energy future, energy efficiency is action number one. We can cut greenhouse gases and protect our environment at the same time we save money...," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson.

Did You Know? |

A single 100W incandescent light bulb used 6 hours a day can cost over $25 per year.
Now, imagine the number of incandescent light bulbs burning in your building at this moment. The number can be overwhelming, and so can the cost.
Lighting associated with commercial buildings accounts for close to 71 percent of overall lighting electricity used in the United States, and it is the largest cost component of a commercial property's electricity bill and a significant portion of the total energy bill. With good design, lighting energy use in most buildings can be cut at least in half while maintaining or improving lighting quality.
The IFMA Foundation has constructed a Sustainability How-To Guide Series that explains the benefits of lighting retrofits and upgrades, provides a broad description of options available to professionals to enhance the quality of lighting while saving energy, and can serve as a reference for standards and activities to help mitigate the costs and consumption of energy.
Detailed reporting findings include:
- Basic lighting concepts and terms
- Efforts on a global level to increase lighting efficiency
- Lamp and ballast types
- The benefits of occupancy sensors and natural light
- Future technology for lighting solutions
- Lighting upgrades

Dispose of Fluorescent Lamps
Due to the levels of mercury used to create fluorescent lamps, the EPA has classified them in the hazardous waste category known as universal waste. The disposal of these lamps is regulated at the state level, however there are three common options available to facilities when it comes to florescent lamp disposal.
Pick-up Recycling Services
Pick-up services are scheduled recycling services that allow facility managers to pack used lamps into boxes or fiber based drums for recycling. These services are relatively inexpensive and are the most common of the three options.
Pre-paid Recycling Containers
These containers are kept at the building and packed with fluorescent bulbs as they are used. One the container is full, the facility manager ships the box to the recycling center. Although this tends to be a more expensive approach to fluorescent lamp disposal than the pick-up recycling services, it can be more convenient for facility managers as it affords the facility with the option of immediate ship.
Lamp Crushing
Some facilities have installed a controlled emissions lamp crushing system that allows them to reduce the total lamp volume, reduce the amount of storage space needed and possible reduce transpiration costs. These crushers are regulated at the state level and, in some jurisdictions they cannot be used because they have been shown to release mercury.
As advocates for building sustainability and energy efficiency, Servidyne is at the forefront of energy conservation and the movement toward a greener planet. That is why Servidyne always operates in full compliance relative to hazardous waste regulations, and recycle in accordance with all federal, state and local laws. Additionally, we provide a certificate of disposal if requested.
