From the Desk of Valerie Rapp
Chairperson of the Board
Without the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce?!!!!
It would be difficult to imagine a business community functioning without the support of its local chamber. More importantly, one would wonder how many businesses would choose to locate in the Medina area, and remain, without the commitment and support of our Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce. In a world of negativity, where it is so easy to point out the shortcomings of others, but not address where the problem truly lies, the presence of our Chamber contributes to a positive community.
I was reminded by our newest board member, Kathy Breitenbucher, "It would be like when Clarence, the angel, shows George Bailey what the world would be like if he hadn't been in it. The movie, It's a Wonderful Life, gave us the opportunity to see how one person's life affects so many other." One would wonder how many successful businesses would be where they are to today if it were not for the involvement and support of the "our" Chamber.
On July 27th, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce board of directors met for its mid-year retreat. During that half day meeting, the reflective question, "What would it be like without the Greater Medina Chamber?" was asked by Don Simmons, one of the board's ex-officios. This is a great opportunity to share some collective thoughts from our informative board members regarding the lack of our Chamber's presence. While this question could be viewed from a negative perspective, the responses were totally turned around and the positive comments emerged because "There is a Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce!"
Below are some collective replies for our board of directors and ex-officio members. Please read and be proud of these individuals who are representing you, our members, and your business. The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce could not be in better hands. (These are their actual replies.)

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA)
Applications for the 2012-13 class
The Chamber is accepting applications for the next class of Young Entrepreneurs. This program gives high school students an opportunity to start a business during the school year. Last year's students said the program was one of the most valuable programs they had ever experienced and parents of students said the class changed the course of their children's lives.
This program introduces students to entrepreneurs, business leaders, talented professionals, mentors and other students to learn about business. They learn how to apply civics and economics, legal and accounting, marketing, social networking, computer skills and public speaking. In early Spring of 2013 the students make a pitch to local investors for start-up money for their businesses and one student is selected to attend the National Competition for a chance to win up to $30,000 in scholarship funds.
Local businesses and organizations sponsor the program which is held at Medina High School from 4-7 on Wednesdays according to the school schedule. Any High School student living in Medina County is invited to apply. The program can accept up to 24 students. There is a $195 tuition that is payable after a student is accepted but there are also scholarships available.
Medina YEA! Will hold a free information session for parents and students interested in learning more about the program on Wednesday, August 29th 6pm - 7:30pm at Medina High School. Call the Chamber office for more details or email Debra at the Chamber at exec@medinaochamber.com

LOWER YOUR WORKERS' COMPENSATION PREMIUMS TODAY!
Now is the time to have your program evaluated for participation in alternative rating programs provided by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) and sponsored by the Greater Medina Chamber.
Through our workers' compensation third party administrator, CompManagement, Inc., your organization can see how participation in a program will impact your costs as well as how these programs can be stacked together to achieve the maximum savings available for your organization. CompManagement and the Greater Medina Chamber take seriously our responsibility of providing you with an accurate projection. We pride ourselves on estimating your workers' compensation premiums so you can set your annual budget with confidence.
- Group Rating Program -discounts typically range between 15% to the maximum discount available from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation which for policy year 2012 was 53%
- Stacking Options: add on participation in Destination Excellence (1 - 3%), Drug Free Safety Program (4 - 7%), $15k Medical Only Program, and Safety Council performance bonus (2%)
Not eligible for Group Rating? Consider participating in one of the following programs:
- Group Retrospective Rating Program - similar to group experience rating but an employer continues to pay their individual premium with the potential to receive retrospective premium adjustments at the end of three evaluation periods; most groups can expect to save between 5% and 45% with claim costs included.
- Large/Small Deductible Program - receive a discount up to 77% for large deductible and 26% for small deductible participation in exchange for agreeing to pay a set amount of costs associated with a claim.
- 100% EM Cap - a 100% cap is placed on the amount an individual employer's experience modifier can increase from year to year.
- Workplace Wellness grants - integrating wellness activities with workers' compensation efforts yields a better return on investment, reduction in return-to-days as well as the frequency and severity of claims when coordinated; grants are available up to $15,000 for a four year period
- Transitional Work grants - transitional work plans can save employers money by returning injured workers back to the workplace in a timely manner; a back-end bonus is possible of up to 10% of pure premium based on the successful use of transitional work in eligible claims
If your current third party administrator is not providing your organization with these alternative options, or elevating your service experience, consider enlisting the services of CompManagement, Ohio's leading workers' compensation administrator and take advantage of this tremendous member benefit offered by the Greater Medina Chamber.
To receive a free, no obligation savings quote, contact CompManagement's Customer Support Unit at (800) 825-6755, option 3 or visit click here to complete online.
