Twenty-five Years of Change

Debra Lynn-Schmitz

When I moved to Medina in 1981, I commuted to downtown Cleveland to work at Ohio Bell. There were times when I left for work that I wouldn't see another car until I got to Strongsville. With the break-up of the Bell companies in 1984, I needed a new career. My husband and I tried to move to Florida but that only lasted a few months. During those months in Florida I worked for the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce selling memberships in the construction industry. That's where I chose my new career with a Chamber of Commerce.

I started with the Medina Chamber on May 20, 1987 with a Business after Business at Berkley-Small, a company that manufactured newspaper dispensers and was located where Packaging Specialties is today. W. Eugene "Gene" Morris was the Executive, Barbara Morris and Karen Whitaker were the office staff.         CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL ARTICLE

HELP UNITED WAY OF MEDINA COUNTY STUFF THE BUS!

Do you remember your first day of school? Or maybe you remember your child's first day of school? It is typically a very exciting and challenging day. Many of us learned a key principal on that first day that we use every day in the business world:  the more prepared we are for new and challenging things the greater the chances for future growth and success.

Would you believe that the 2011 Ohio Department of Education's Cupp Report (Click Here to Access the Report ) showed that 1 in 5 Medina County school children were at risk of being unprepared for the first day of school?

Together with United Way of Medina County, we are encouraging you to do something about this. There are many different ways that you can help:

  • Conduct a collection drive in your company, neighborhood, church or community group and drop off collected supplies to a United Way "drop off" location

  • Volunteer to sort donated items or staff the "Stuff the Bus" by the Grandstands at the Medina County Fair

  • Provide a monetary donation for supply purchases such as scientific calculators, backpacks and other specialty items that are typically not donated in sufficient amounts

The 4th annual "Stuff the Bus" campaign will run through August 6, 2012

Help us help kids! It is easy and impactful...and not too late! Simply contact United Way of Medina County by calling Ashley Waite at 330.725.3926 x.223 or emailing her at [email protected]

CONGRATULATIONS!

We are excited to celebrate Karen Whitaker's 30th year with the Chamber this month!  Please send her a note of congratulations at [email protected]

Karen, THANK YOU for all that you do!

The Chamber is also excited to welcome Kathy Breitenbucher to the Chamber Board of Directors this month.  Kathy is managing partner at The Pedestal Group.

Kathy, welcome on board and we are honored to have you!

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA)

Applications for the 2012-13 class

The Chamber is accepting applications for the next class of Young Entrepreneurs. This program gives high school students an opportunity to start a business during the school year. Last year's students said the program was one of the most valuable programs they had ever experienced and parents of students said the class changed the course of their children's lives.

This program introduces students to entrepreneurs, business leaders, talented professionals, mentors and other students to learn about business. They learn how to apply civics and economics, legal and accounting, marketing, social networking, computer skills and public speaking. In early Spring of 2013 the students make a pitch to local investors for start-up money for their businesses and one student is selected to attend the National Competition for a chance to win up to $30,000 in scholarship funds.

Local businesses and organizations sponsor the program which is held at Medina High School from 4-7 on Wednesdays according to the school schedule. Any High School student living in Medina County is invited to apply. The program can accept up to 24 students. There is a $195 tuition that is payable after a student is accepted but there are also scholarships available.

Medina YEA!  Will hold a free information session for parents and students interested in learning more about the program on Thursday, July 26 at the Medina County University Center from 6-7:30.  Call the Chamber office for more details or email Debra at the Chamber at [email protected]

Click here for an application form.
