Welcome to Our December Newsletter!
In this edition we share warm wishes for the holidays and give an update on how recent IFDA events, such as the Kennedy Institute Holiday Party, were successful and fun. Also in this issue, IFDA President Jackie Passaro shares a holiday message and we invite both members and non-members to RSVP to a wonderful upcoming event in January, the Winter Soiree.

Winter Soiree, Wednesday January 12th, 2011
The home and art studio of Evelyn Avery, designed by Barry Dixon, will be the setting for a home tour and short talk about her art by the hostess herself, and a talk and book signing by Barry. This is an evening not to be missed. Barry will speak about his furniture line, the Barry Dixon Furniture Collection by Thomlinson/Erwin-Lambeth, and the placement of it in Ms. Avery's home/studio. He will also be available to sign his book, Barry Dixon Interiors. Ms. Avery will give a brief talk about her beautiful home and the challenges of incorporating an art studio within it. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. Space is LIMITED, so prompt reservations are a must, and can be made by contacting Laura Fox at JANUS et Cie, 202.333.8111.

Cookie Fun! ...And a Great Fundraiser, Too
JANUS et CieFor those who missed the cookie event at JANUS et Cie to benefit Labels for Love, we're really sorry. A great time was had by all, and the fundraising was a grand success, too. Watch for pictures of it in the next IFDA newsletter, although we have one share in this newsletter too. JANUS et Cie is planning to do it again, so you have another chance. Don't miss out!

Congratulations to Katie Lester!
Katie Lester, Member of the IFDA Board of Directors, gave birth to her daughter, Grace Marie, on November 29, 2010. Everyone is doing well, and we wish them all our very best, always. What a precious holiday gift.

Jackie Passaro
The month of December always seems to be a time for reflection. As I look back over the past twelve months, it is hard for me to believe how far we have come as a Chapter. The need to increase our Chapter membership has been a constant struggle over the past few years. We have been up against difficult economic times and competition from other professional design organizations. I am proud to say that with extremely hard work on the part of our Board of Directors, we have increased our membership in 2010 with the addition of 21 professional members and one student member! We certainly have come a long way. As a matter of fact, I was paid the highest compliment last week at the Kennedy Institute Christmas Party when a long time supporter mentioned to me that she did not recognize any of the volunteers (that's because many were new to IFDA!).

As we move forward in 2011, the Board of Directors will continue to focus on recruiting new members, and just as importantly, retaining existing members. We have many exciting programs planned for the coming year and I look forward to spending time with all of you. The following saying makes a lot of sense to me, "You have to give to get." Membership in IFDA will only be of value to you if you participate in the Chapter events and programs. Please feel free to contact me of any of the Board members to discuss planning and your desire to participate. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with outstanding individuals this year. None of which would have been possible if I had not pushed myself to get involved.

I wish you and your families a joyous holiday season,
Jackie Passaro
IFDA Washington Chapter President
Christmas Party at the Kennedy Institute
Once again it was a grand success with more children and adults this year than ever before being treated to a spirited Christmas Party complete with food and gifts, singing and pictures with Santa. John Petro of PETRO Design/Build, chairman of the event for the 27th year in a row, attributes some of the success to all the new faces involved this year.

Jack Thompson (center) leads the group in Christmas carols during the morning children's party.
"We had twenty volunteers from IFDA for the Children's morning party and visit with Santa, and we had twelve volunteers for the adult's evening pizza party and visit with Santa, and many of them were first-time volunteers," Petro said. The Joseph P. Kennedy Institute serves the needs of mentally and physically disabled students and graduates who are now living in group homes in the area. "Next year we hope to be able to include residents of Bethlehem House and perhaps Best Buddies, and more residents of other independent group homes in the evening party," Petro said, and encourages anyone who knows of such a home to contact him, or any IFDA board member, with that information.

Petro expressed special thanks to Ken Huntsman (aka Santa Claus) for his tireless efforts again this year, and to Jack Thompson (Petro Design/Build) for stepping into the role of choral director for the event at the last minute!

"We're looking forward to an even bigger and better Christmas Party at the Kennedy Institute next year", he added. "Oh, yes, and lunch was fabulous."
