Profiles in Storytelling - Barbara Scott

Barbara ScottI was born in Pennsylvania but am an army brat.  I have lived in Kyushu, Japan, Livorno and Vicenza, Italy, Nurnberg and Munich, Germany. Also various place in the States.  My Grandma called us gypsies.  We have lived in GJ since '74 but have changed houses 8 times!

I was a "professional volunteer" and for work was a real estate property manager.

My favorite place to travel is some place new- the ocean is first on the list.  Every place has its good and bad aspects.

Mary Ann Janson introduced me to Spellbinders.  She was having too much fun!

What I enjoy most about Spellbinders is the children and the applause.  The flexibility of the schedule has great appeal as a retiree.

I like stories that have some moral or teaching aspect best.

My favorite stories are The Tale Teller and The Red Lion.

I especially like to tell to 4th grade.

I think we should just have fun with it because the kids really like to have us there.

************************

I believe most of us are having more fun than a person should be allowed to have!

Thanks Barbara for sharing a little bit about yourself with us!  We are a fortunate chapter indeed!  kjh

Bits and Pieces

Some new bits and pieces:

*THANK you to those of you who have sent a response to the Profile questionnaire I sent out!  I appreciate it!

*THANK YOU to Judi Sammons who has volunteered to assist with the newsletter; monthly profile section! Among other things she will be bringing her new camera to our workshops and activities to take pictures for our photo library.  These photos will be used in future e-newsletters so that we can get to know who is who!  If, for some reason, you do not wish to have any pictures of you included in our e-news please let me know by sending me an email.  Thanks!

*Policy update/reminder:  If you are going to miss a scheduled telling for any reason it is your responsibility to re-schedule with the teacher and/or find a substitute to fill in for you.  THE EXCEPTION to this is if you will be missing your scheduled dates for two months or more.  In these cases contact Anne Saunders so she can find a long term fill in for you.

*If you have not done so yet go to Bill Harley's website to sign up for his free newsletter.  The newsletter notifies you of the FREE monthly download he offers every month.  Sometimes a song, sometimes a short story, but always FREE FREE FREE!

Some reminders:

*Be sure to continue to regularly send Bob Spears your story sheets reporting your storytelling activity for our records!  If you need an electronic form to submit to Bob, or want to work out another reporting method email Bob Spears today.

*If you have any bits and pieces of Mesa County Spellbinders history please submit them to Ingrid de Leland, who has agreed to serve as our historian.  Things you might pass along: photos, news articles, magazine articles and anything else you think might be nice to have for our records.

*Our storyteller coordinator, Anne Saunders is winding up her commitment to do the coordinating for two years. Due to some extenuating circumstances that Anne is experiencing, we would like to identify someone to take on the overall coordination as soon as possible.  Please consider helping with this vital position.  Please contact Anne Saunders for details on the position.  She has worked to make this position a much more manageable one, so don't be intimidated!

Workshop & Stories
Show and Tell  We had a great time at our February workshop!

Bob Spears shared a wonderful story: Savitri: A Tale from Ancient India.  The story link brings you to a site with the text of the story as well as a pronunciation guide for the key names in the story.  You can also go to another section of Aaron Shepard's website for information on the picture book.  It was a great experience listening to Bob tell this tale!

Linda Pryor shared The Perfect Tribute which is a story, written in the early 1900's based on Abraham Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address.  The link in the title takes you to Gutenberg.org which provides you with the e-book for your perusal.   Linda did a wonderful job telling this story about one of the most famous speeches given by an American president.

NOTE:
Do you have a book you've read recently that you would recommend to your fellow Spellbinders?  Books about storytelling techniques, story sources, any book that you think useful would be helpful.  If so, please send me the name of the book, the author and a short summary of the book!
