A little bit about us: The Spellbinders organization is dedicated to restoring the art of oral storytelling in order to connect elders to youth, weaving together the wisdom of diverse cultures throughout time.

This newsletter is sent to you by the Mesa County Spellbinders and is published once a month.  Enjoy!

Profiles in Storytelling
Flower
Each month we feature one of our many Mesa County Spellbinders, telling you a little bit about them, their background and experiences, and bits of wisdom about their adventures as a Spellbinder.  Since we only get to see each other once a month this is a great opportunity for us to really get to know each other better.

We hope to begin again telling you a little bit more about your fellow storytellers in the coming months.  I will be asking those of you who have not been profiled for some information and, if you have them, pictures of yourself.

Thank you to all who have graciously participated in this feature in the past.  It has been great getting to know you all better!

Spellbinders Show & Tell
At our August workshop we heard some great stories!

Elizabeth Clark shared a story "A Big Quiet House." There are a number of sources for this story, one of which is a book by Heather Forest.

Mary Ann Janson told "How Spider got its Web" which can be found in the book Spider Spins a Story by Jill Max.

Bill Baily offered a special treat.  A story told via a song.  One that he wrote himself and told (without the guitar) last school year.  Anne heard the story and asked about it.  Bill shared his passion for Bluegrass music and told her he had written the story as a song.  She asked him to share it and we were glad she did!

Be sure to join us at our September meeting for more great story sharing experiences!

Spellbinder Information for school year 2010-2011
Spellbinders received the following at the August meeting:

Volunteer forms:  One form must be filled out for each school where you will be telling stories
District 51 School Calendar
Spellbinder pamphlets "Information for Teachers"
Information and suggestions for laying the foundation for a successful storytelling experience, presented by Mary Ann Janson

If you were unable to attend the meeting, these items can be obtained at future meetings.  Volunteer forms will, as always, be available at each school site and the calendar can be downloaded from District 51's website.

Spellbinder Liaisons
As you probably know, Anne Saunders has been working diligently to create a coordination effort that is as manageable as possible.  This year we will begin a system which involves the assignment of one of our Spellbinders to each school site in order to coordinate assignments of storytellers at that particular school.  Anne will still be doing overall coordination, but having a Spellbinder assigned to each school will make this job a lot easier!

We would like to recognize those who have stepped forward to serve as a liaison to a specific school:

Appleton:  Sylvia Bingham
Chipeta:  Anne Saunders
Clifton:  Ruthmary Allison
Dos Rios:  Elizabeth Clark
Mesa View:  Kathleen Pilkenton
Nisley:  Lee Comstock
Orchard Avenue:  Bob Spears
Pear Park:  Janice Shepherd
Pomona:  Penny Stewart
Rim Rock:  Crystal Brittain
Rocky Mountain:  Steve Skoglund
Shelledy:  Evelyn Kyle
Thunder Mountain:  Sally Matchett
Tope:  Janice Hogue

Thank you all for volunteering for these positions!

We hope you find this newsletter useful.  Please let us know what you would like to see in future issues by clicking Newsletter Feedback to send your suggestions via email.
