Greetings!
Welcome to Mesa County Spellbinders Newsletter!
A little bit about us:
The mission of the National Spellbinders organization is to nurture literacy, character and intergenerational community through the art of oral storytelling. In order to spread the magic of oral storytelling Spellbinder chapters train volunteers to become storytellers in their communities.
This newsletter is sent to you by the Mesa County Spellbinders. Enjoy! |
Spellbinder Profile - Laurie Kollasch
Laurie has been an animal control officer, worked in an animal shelter, worked as a veterinary technician, and a bank teller. She also taught quilting and craft classes for 20 years. She now has a full time job raising her two girls, tending a few acres of hay , managing horses, a dog, a cat, chickens, a guinea pig, a garden, (and sometimes her husband.) She has been a 4-H horse leader for 12 years and is an active advocate for gifted education.
Laurie's hobbies include art (drawing, painting, sculpting, jewlery and quilting) and outdoor adventuring.
Laurie learned about Spellbinders from a student in one of her quilting classes, Dottie Rogers.
Laurie's favorite type of stories are those that entertain and are FUN! Her favorite stories are Borregita (her first story) and the Paper Bag Princess. She currently tells stories for Kindergarten through 4th grade classes. She is also hoping to learn to tell to adult audiences and to do interpretive storytelling soon.
Laurie says that being a Spellbinder has introduced her to a wonderful world that she never knew existed. It also keeps her in touch with friends and children...two things she loves!
When asked for some wisdom Laurie shared that it gets easier as time goes on and that we are always learning and developing.
Laurie has also served on the Mesa County Spellbinders Board for the past two years. She has been in charge of Public Relations, helping to promote and recruit for Spellbinders. She has recently relinquished these responsibilities in order to become a trainer for new Spellbinders in our chapter.

Question of the Month:
Do you have any favorite stories that you like to tell at the beginning of the school year? If so, please share the name of the story as well as the source.
Well, I guess y'all were very busy this summer as none of you responded to the question of the month! So I'll tell you what I like to do :-)
If I am telling to a new group of students, I will tell the stories "Spider's Box of Stories" (about where all the stories in the world came from) and "The Wise Queen" (about what a storyteller does.) My version of "Spider's Box of Stories" was adapted from "Anansi's Box of Stories" as told by Jay O'Callahan, however you can find another version in a book by Stephen Krensky; Anansi and the Box of Stories. The Wise Queen is adapted from the story" The Three Dolls" and this can be found in the book Ready-to-Tell Tales edited by David Holt and Bill Mooney.
I first heard this story told by Ruthmary Allison during my Spellbinder
training and was inspired to add it to my list of stories. Thanks Ruthmary!
