E-Verify

Announcement - Federal Contractors to begin Using E-Verify

E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that allows employers to verify the employment eligibility of their employees, regardless of citizenship.  Based on the information provided by the employee on his or her Form I-9, E-Verify checks this information electronically against records contained in DHS and Social Security Administration (SSA) databases.

Federal contracts awarded and solicitations issued after September 8, 2009 will include a clause committing government contractors to use E-Verify. If awarded a contract with this clause, federal contractors will need to begin using the E-Verify system to confirm that all of their new hires and their employees directly working on federal contracts are authorized to legally work in the United States. A federal contractor may elect to also verify their entire workforce.

Northwestern's Participation in the E-Verify Program

Northwestern will enroll in the E-Verify program within 30 days of being awarded a contract with this clause and then have 90 days from the date of enrollment to begin using E-Verify. We are currently in the RFP process to select a vendor to implement an electronic I-9 employment eligibility system with an interface to E-Verify to be used for all new hires and to reverify the currently active employee population. Employees hired before November 7, 1986 and continuing in employment will be exempt from this process. When an employee has been assigned to a federal contract with this clause, we will begin reverifying all active employees in his/her Administrative Unit.

Refer to the HRIS website under "Coming Soon" for upcoming implementation details: http://www.northwestern.edu/hr/hris/

The Office of Work/Life Resources

Striving for a Healthy Balance:
The Northwestern University Office of Work/Life Resources provides programs, services and consultation to enable staff and faculty to effectively balance the competing demands of work and home.

October is National Work & Family Month

In 2003, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed  U.S. Senate Resolution 210, designating October as National Work & Family Month. This resolution asserts that "reducing the conflict between work and family life should be a national priority".

In recognition of National Work & Family Month, the Office of Work/Life Resources is sponsoring the following workshop:

"Dual Career Couples: Making it Work"
Presented by Dr. Mark Bakal, Psychologist and Experienced Couples Counselor

Many of us had "traditional" role models in our families - one parent went to work and the other was at home. Today, a majority of couples are both working outside of the home. Therefore, many of us are charting new territory. This seminar will provide you with tools to manage and thrive in times of high stress. Participants will learn practical skills to apply in their day to day lives.

Thursday, October 1st - Evanston Campus
Norris Center
Evans Room (1st Floor) - Noon to 1:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 15th - Chicago Campus
Lurie Research Building
Gray Seminar Room - Noon to 1:00 p.m.

For additional information or to register, contact Phyllis Ellis at 847-467-1460 or p-ellis@northwestern.edu.

Do you have a childcare back-up plan?
If you haven't done it yet, now is a good time to plan for emergency back-up care. Many families have their regular care arrangements in place, but what happens when your regular caregiver is unavailable or your child is sick? The key to having good back-up care is planning ahead. Back-up care can be provided at a childcare center, in a family daycare or in your home. If you want to consider your options, as well as potential resources, contact the Action for Children childcare specialist at 312-823-1275.

If you are interested in setting up back-up care through the McGaw YMCA Children's Center or designated Kindercare Centers in Evanston or the University Children's Center in Chicago, you will need to register ahead of time. For additional information, go to:
or contact the Office of Work/Life Resources at 847-491-3612.
HRIS Updates

Reminder: Enrolling in HR Courses vs. "Dropping In"

To ensure training sessions go as smoothly as possible, we'd like to remind everyone that you must enroll in a course via HRIS Self Service (https://nuhr.northwestern.edu) before attending. If the session for which you are enrolling has a registration and/or cancellation fee, you will only appear on the roster after your Training Approver has approved your training request. So, please encourage your Training Approver to finalize your request so we know to expect you.

Making sure you are properly enrolled helps the instructor prepare sufficient materials and ensures you will receive communications relating to the class, such as reminders and cancellation notices.

Additionally, because we need to update the security permission for students before class, it is important that you submit all access authorization forms needed several days before the session. Arriving to class without the proper security setup prevents you from getting the full benefit of the exercises and can delay your ability to use the system. This is especially true for the HRIS Query course.
Learning & Organization Development
