Greetings from Cedarburg! 
 
With the arrival of March, spring fever seems to have kicked in and most everybody is out and about enjoying the longer days and the prospect of warmer weather.  Regardless of what's happening outside, there is always something happening in Cedarburg. 
 
Grape Clusters on the vineThe Cedar Creek Winery welcomes spring in high style with their Annual Open House March 20 & 21.  This crowd-pleasing event includes a wine tasting and tours of the winery, cooking demonstrations, barrel tastings and a "how-to" presentation where you'll learn about pruning your own home grapevines. 
 
   
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the Cedarburg Cultural Center's 16th Annual Irish Eve.  You'll enjoy a traditional Irish dinner, live musical performance by Leahy's Luck, brews and a fundraiser.  Advance tickets are highly recommended as this popular event sells out every year.   Contact the Cedarburg Cultural Center for more details. 
 
The Chamber of Commerce has organized another Girlfriend's Getaway in Historic Cedarburg for Thursday, April 15, 2010.  Activities for the getaway include overnight accommodations at the Washington House Inn, a wine & cheese reception, two complimentary workshops ("Jewelry 101" & "Update Your Spring Wardrobe"), tour of Cedar Creek Winery, continental breakfast and the option to create your own Swarovski crystal girlfriend bracelet.   Registrations received prior to April 1st receive preferred pricing of $89 per person ($99 after April 1st).  Contact the Inn at any time to register for this fun getaway.

March 6 Cedarburg Performing Arts Center presents pianist Marcia Ball.  Marcia knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. 7:30pm, $42.

 

March 7 The Lakeshore Symphonic Band, directed by Walter Rich, will present its winter concert, "A Travel in Time" at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. The Lakeshore Symphonic Band has been a musical tradition in southeastern Wisconsin since 1976.  Admission $5. Call CPAC, 376-6161 for tickets.

 

March 13 The 16th Annual Irish Eve at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. Enjoy a traditional Irish dinner, live performance by Leahy's Luck, brews and fundraiser.  Advance tickets recommended as this popular event sells out every year. Tickets $40; 6:00pm. Contact the Cedarburg Cultural Center in person, by phone or online.

 

March 14 - 21 Fly Fishing Series at Riveredge Nature Center: "Fly Tying, The Next Step" you'll tie poppers, nymphs and dry flies, as well as learn different ways to weight flies so you don't have to use that dreaded split shot on your leader. There are three sessions in all (12:30-3:30pm March 14 and March 21; 6-9pm March 16). Riveredge will supply the material, participants bring tools. Pre-registration required; $55,class limited to six. Call 262-375-2715 to register.

 

March 18 The Cedarburg Cultural Center's "Sample of Cedarburg" is the annual promotional showcase event for chamber members to display, demonstrate and showcase their business and products. Members of the community are invited to stop by, see and sample the wide variety of products and services available in Cedarburg. 5:30-8:00pm.

 

March 19 American Legion Post 288 holds a fish fry every third Friday of each month. Service starts at 4:00 pm and ends at 9:00 pm. Carry outs are available, please call 262-377-9987 to place your order.

 

March 20-21 Celebrate the end (we hope) of Winter at Cedar Creek Winery's 20th Annual Open House. Tours, wine tasting, cooking with wine demonstrations and barrel tastings.  Presentations by the winery's own winemaker and gospel music by Ernest Collins. Call the winery at 800-827-8020 for further details.

 

March 20 Enjoy a wonderful hearth-cooked meal, prepared with your own hands, in the famous Wade House stagecoach inn. Guests prepare 19th-century dishes on a wood-burning stove and over an open fire, just as Mrs. Wade did more than 150 years ago. This participatory event culminates in a delicious sit-down meal in the lovely Wade House dining room. Seating is limited; advance reservations are required. Call 920-526-3271.$45 per person, 11a-3pm. Private Hearthside Dinners for groups of 10-20 may also be arranged.

 

March 20 Riveredge Nature Center Maple Sugaring season is the great celebratory time in the forest to welcome the return of spring. See the traditional methods of sap collection, meet artisans in the woods, and participate in seasonal crafts and music. End your visit at the Sugar Shack with delicious Riveredge pancakes made from organic flours drenched in Riveredge's own maple syrup. Alterra coffee will also be served.10a-3pm.

 

March 26-27 Cedarburg Junior Woman's Club members present the 13th Wearable Art Show. The weekend kicks off on with a breast cancer fundraiser, the Pink Tie Affair, at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. The fundraiser (7pm-9pm) is open to the public. Admission $12.  The Bosom Buddy Walk/Run takes place at 9am Saturday. Participants are invited to register online. The Wearable Art Show, 9am-4pm, is one of the premier shows in the Midwest and draws many quality artists known for their unique work. Admission $5.

Recipe of the Month

Tropical Coffee Cake
 
This easy-to-make cake is moist and delicious! 
 
Coffee Cake 
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup crushed pineapple, drained
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
 
Topping
1 cup coconut
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
 
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease a 9-inch square pan.  In large bowl, combine all coffee cake ingredients and mix until well blended.  Pour into pan.  Combine all topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter.  Bake 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
